I just got my braces today and they hurt alot! How long does it take for the pain to go away??
Braces????
I feel your pain! I'm on my second round of them. It took me about a week before the pain really went away.
Advil works ok for the pain, but mostly you just have to wait it out. Soft foods for a while is a must. Soup, mashed potatoes and pastas worked well for me. Just nothing that is going to stick too much in the braces.
And be sure and follow the orthos directions!! You don't want to be in them any longer than you have to right? :)
Reply:a few days. try taking painkillers like ibuprofin! good luck!
Reply:Oh i hated wearing mine i had them for 4 years!!!
the main pain you will feel today, it will be slightly duller to tomorrow and by the fourth it should have almost gone - expect the same thing every time you go in to have them adjusted.
sorry - but it's worth it in the end
Reply:a week or two
Reply:Aime,
The pain will go away in about three days. But every month you go in to get them tightened you will experience the same pain for three days. Ooh!! especially when you try to eat! :-(
I wear braces and had them in a year now but all the pain and torture is worth it in the end! ;-)
Reply:The pain will go away in a while. Just eat soft things. Here is a tutorial on braces:
1) It's not exactly harder to brush braces as opposed to when you didn't have them. It's just that it takes more time and you have to make sure you get out all the food, candy, etc. out of your mouth and out of the wires.
2) No, I don't think people with braces are always unattractive. Actually, braces are almost like a fad because you can get different colors and sometimes people admire you braces. Also, when you get your braces off, you'll look great (not better, but great meaning that you looked fine with braces and fine without the braces).
3) It took about a week for me not to realize that I had braces or sometimes it takes less time. You just feel wires and it's not like you had some major mouth headgear thing that makes your jaw hurt 24/7.
4) You have to stay away from junk food. It's tempting but if you get a cavity where your braces are it's a problem. They have to take off your braces, fill in the cavity, put the braces back on, and they usually charge more because the process of your braces is delayed just because you ate junk food. Sugar free gum is a better choice but a better choice is not to have gum at all. It's sticky and gets stuck in your braces and wires. Yuck!
Also, you'll start to adapt to your braces as if you had them forever and when you get them off, you'll feel weird too. But, in the end you'll get used to not having braces just like you did when you had braces.
Good luck and you'll look great in a few years!
Keep brushing!
