Braces????

I know the dentist said that you are not supposed to eat a lot of foods like gum and chips. Is this only for the first month or is it for the whole 18 months (that is how long I am going to have the braces on.)?

Some of my friends who have braces on eat gum. Should I?

Braces????
For the whole time you have braces. They say that so if those sticky or hard foods break the brackets or get stuck on the wires, you won't have to pay to fix that problem.. Also the longer they stay fixed, the less time you have to wear braces.

Some kids eat that stuff anyway because their dentists didn't tell them WHY, just DON'T do it. Just try not to eat that stuff. Even though it seems harmless, little things like that slowly break away at the braces. Just give up that little thing to keep those things fixed and you won't have to wear them longer than you have to. I never listened to my dentist, ate what they told me not to, and I had to wear them for years. They kept breaking out of nowhere. You CAN eat them, just not so often, because then after a while you get careless and then CRACK! $20 down the drain.
Reply:They mean for the whole 18 months...

You certainly can if you want to, though. Just be careful to brush your teeth well- and don't break any brakets :)

Personally, I don't because I want to make sure the treatment works as quickly as possible... So I'm following every rule in the book :D

Reply:You can eat them. It's just that you run the risk of breaking of the brackets off your tooth or just get food stuck in them (eewww)... It's for the whole time you wear braces...just be careful, and keep them clean!!!
Reply:Don't chew gum at all when you have braces. You may think that the metal they put in your mouth is really sturdy, but in reality, it is quite easy to break. Gum and other chewy or really crunchy foods (chips) could break your braces and make you have to have longer treatment. Also, if you eat sugary foods and candy, it makes cleaning your teeth harder, and could lead to scarring of your teeth around the brackets. If you want your treatment to go as quickly and easily as possible, and you want your teeth to look really perfect in the end, DO WHAT YOUR ORTHODONTIST TELLS YOU TO DO.
Reply:yeah eat it, it doesnt stick to your brases even if it does you can take it away easily. Trust me you can still at evrything you want. Go for it!!!!!!
Reply:I have braces.

Its just hurts to eat it (Chips) And some other hard stuff. Plus it could cut that little wire thinger.

Gum- Only sugerfree, or whatever gum that is NOT sticky. I ate sticky gum and It stuck in my braces :P
Reply:don't worry, you can eat chips and chew gum. I've had braces for 1 year and a half now and I chew gum and eat chips every once in a while. Maybe you're teeth are more different if they advised you that eating chips will ruin them. I'm saying that it's not a big deal but if your doctor seriously told you not to chew gum or eat chips, then don't.
Reply:don't do it if the dentist said not to. even if your friends did it you don't have to. here is an example: if your friends jumped off a bridge would you? don't do it because it is cool. when your friends have messed up teeth they will have there braces put on again and you will be there with perfect straight white teeth! good luck! e-mail me at mariadancegirl@yahoo.com with and question, comments or concerns!
Reply:i have eaten a lot of things that my orthodontist says to avoid, like pretzels and chips.

but gum is tough because it does stick to the brackets and it is hard to get it off. freedent is one brand that isnt as sticky.

good luck!
