I didn't have braces as a kid, didn't need them. But now as an adult some of my teeth a starting to go a bit crooked. My dentist/ortho recomended braces? is this unusual for an adult, I'm 32.
I'm getting removable ones next week, upper and lower. He told me they are basically like the retainers but with a few more wires on. The booklet I was given goes on about it messing up your speach for a while and difficulty eating certain foods. I'm a bit freeked by all this and almost backed out since he told me in my case it going to be a long slow process. Does it really mess up your speech and eating??
For how long? What will it feel like initially? Suppose I'll try them for a while and can always quit.
Anyone else been in this situation?

Braces????
Your definately not too old for braces. I just turned 48 and I have only had my braces on for a month. I got the all metal kind that are called 3M Smart Clips. I haven't had any problems with them. Getting them put on was completely painless. I had a little discomfort the first few days but I was able to eat soft foods just fine. I do have a slight lisp and I have a hard time saying my "S" sounds. But it's not that bad and most people don't even notice. I find that the lisping is worse when I have been talking a lot and I'm not drinking enough water. It sounds like you are getting Invisilign braces. I know a couple of people that have had these and they have had good results. Just keep a positive attitude and think about how great your smile will be when the treatment is over. You can get through anything. Good luck!

Reply:I've never had braces, but I have heard of a newer technology called "Invisalign". You could try asking your dentist about them. Here is a link about braces you might find interesting and helpful:

Reply:Dont worry. your going to be fine. I am 20 and just got braces 2 days ago. I had the same problem....my teeth were straight until i got my wisdom teeth in. Trust me its not unusual for an adult to get braces...i see soooo many adults with them now and the ortho office always has a few adults when i go there. It is very hard to talk at firt....espesually with "s" sounds. But I know I'll get used to it! hopefully within this first week. My ortho said it may take 3-5 days to get used to talking right again. Plus its going to be hard to eat....i just keep thinking of the end result! :-) DONT QUIT!
