i'm going to be 15 in two months, and i'm getting braces in a couple of weeks!!!!!!!!!! EVERYONE i know who has had braces has gotten them off, i will be the only person i know who still has braces!! but my real problelm is that i'm really scared, does it really hurt, for how long, and is 18 months a long time to have them on? (i want them off before senior year and its the end of freshman year for me)
Braces!!!!?
I have braces and for the first 1 - 2 weeks, it hurt really badly! When you get them put on it is fine but soon afterwards you can fell the pain. If you touch them, they kill! The other time that really kills is when you get them tightened! It will also really hurt. You can't eat much at all so it is best to stick to congee or oats. You can blend up your food into puree which also helps. Also ask for some wax because the braces are sharp (there are metal parts that stick out) and you can easily cut your lip or the sides of it if you don't have some in handy. Although some people don't mind it. Brush well because you can get gum disease which really hurts so you don't want it even though it will hurt the first few days you brush.18 months is not a very long time because some people have to have them on for 2 -3 years like me. And most importantly, listen to what your dentist says because if you don't, your treatment will have to take longer and will be more painful! I hope this helps. Good luck!
ps: If you can survive the pain, it will really be worth it in the end!
Reply:They hurt the next day then it doesn't hurt ever except for after you get them tightened. As soon as you get them on, I would take tylenol/advil (pain stuff).
Reply:i got braces too, got 'em in september. the first week or half week you get them hurts sooooooooooo bad! well it also depends on your pain tolerance. for me it hurt just to touch them with my finger. but now it's all good. they only hurt when you get them tightened, or sometimes the brackets and/or spirals (u might not get spirals though) dig into your gums and that's a bit irritating. but it's not all that bad. i have to have them for 18 months too, which actually isn't too bad. that's the normal time. some really unfortunate people have them longer. oh and this sounds weird but the first week u get them your gums will hurt badly too. this sounds stupid but go to the grocery store and buy the thing you put on the gums or teething babies, it numbs it well.
hope i helped!
Reply:ok i got braces and i was scared about it:
it does NOT hurt, it feels funky
bring soft foodds for the first week
18 months is NOT long, my brother had them for 5 years so feel lucky!!
also make sure you pick up extra wax
wax is my new best friend
just make sure you brush your teeth real good before they put them on.. =]
Reply:I'm quite a bit older than you and have braces, so don't sweat the age. I haven't found braces to be painful. All that I have experienced is soreness for at most a day or two after getting them "tightened". I believe 18 months is pretty common. The biggest pain is keeping your teeth clean. Flossing requires alot more time (so does brushing).
Reply:You will do just fine, I have a 14, 13 and 11 year old all in braces right now and a 26 and 22 year old that had them when they were younger.
Take ibuprofen about 1/2 an hour before each appointment and again in 2 hours and you should be just fine.
18 months isnt too long to have them about average i would guess. my oldest had them for 2 1/2 years.
Make sure you eat soft foods for the first few days after you get them and rinse with salt water if the inside of your cheeks or lips gets irratated. And brush brush brush
Soon you wont even realize they are there and in 18 months you'll be so happy that you had them.
Reply:What would hurt more, waking up every day looking at the way you are or having your teeth corrected and having a beautiful smile.
It may hurt some, take med. such as Advil, Aleve, Tylenol for pain when needed.
I'd put money on it, you would like to have that smile that everyone talks about.
All that is gained is not necessarily achieved without some suffering.
Reply:well i just got my braces and i can say honestly it doesnt hurt when they are outting them on only about 5hours after it now ur teeth will be really sore for about 3 days so it hurts to brush and i have to have mine on for 2 years so ur really lucky just relax after about a week you get so used to the feeling you will forget you even have them on so dont be scared it olny hurts a bit
P.S. ***pain is beauty****
Reply:I am 30 years old and just got mine on in January. Yeah they hurt for like a few days, but with ibuprofen it's bearable. They also hurt for a bit when they are tightened. Anyway, don't feel bad about braces, I look at it this way it's something I am doing to make my smile the most beautiful it can be. I don't really care what someone thinks of me with braces, because I know who I am and I am comfortable with just being me. I got braces, not a personality change. If someone doesn't like you because you have braces then they weren't worth knowing in the first place. HEY WHAT CAN I SAY I LOVE BEING A BRACE FACE!!!! Just smile and show the World how beautiful you are!!! And hey just another tip, for flossing use floss that has a leader in it or use the just a leader and tie the floss on the loop. It's much easier that way. GOOD LUCK!!
Reply:Ok here is my two cents. I got braces my sophomore year so I was 16 and I had them on until my almost the end of my freshman year of college. They hurt for about a week when you put them on and then a average of three days after each tightening. See if you can get ceramic on top so they ain't that noticeable!! Also 18 months I would of killed for that! BRACES ARE HOT REMEMBER!!
Reply:Don't sweat it!! Getting braces doesn't hurt that much...when the orthodontist put them on I didn't feel a thing(it was pretty boring actually) You might feel a bit of pain a few hours after ward(take advil or motrin....they help).... Your mouth might feel a bit sore from the braces but that's normal, you'll get used to it after a few days. and don't worry about the 18 months(i have to wear mine for 2-3 years)...18 months'll fly by and you'll have a prefect smile when the braces come off!!!
Reply:don't be embarassed of your age, i've seen many adults with braces and they're fine. for the first few days you're gonna feel lots of pains.. ach it hurts, but then it'll go away. 18 months actually isn't too long; i thought the minumum you had to have them on was 2 years or something..
tip: be careful when you get food in your braces. it looks really gross sometimes and is embarassing..
Reply:I'm all most 15 and i have braces, and i have to have them on for a further 3 years!
so in answer to your question, no 18 months is not to long and i haven't experienced any real pain. yet.
They only hurt a little when they have been adjusted and that's only for a few days.
