Braces?!?!?

So. I have to get braces soon. Actually I have to get my separators in on Wednesday. How uncomfortable are they? Honestly. I have to get my braces on the following Wednesday. How uncomfortable are the braces? And what is the process at the orthodontist's when you get them on? On a scale from 1 - 10 how much will they hurt? thanks.

Braces?!?!?
Well Braces are a annoying thing to encounter. Spacers hurt a lot but after 2 days it should stop hurting. Braces it self doesnt hurt until you wake up the next morning. Your mouth goes through so much pain but you will manage. Eat soft foods, it will do you good. Also before you get it on take a tylenol or advil and after you leave. The pain won't hurt as much. Every time you get it tightened it will hurt a lot the next morning anf continue for about a day or two. The process takes about a hour probably less. I'd scale it a 9.

Just look at the bright side, you'll have beautiful teeth.

Hope this helps!
Reply:i used 2 have braces but then i got them off at first you will be in pain like no other......but then u shud get used to it.... 6-10

GOOD LUCK! =)
Reply:The only time braces hurt are when you go for monthly tightenings, which would be under a 6 - typically.

The ortho dries your teeth, puts cement on and sticks them on. The uncomfortable part is getting molar bands on, when you just have to bite down on some stick thing to get it on the tooth.
Reply:i have braces and only after they tighten them do they hurt. i would say a 5 :P there nothing to be afraid of....
Reply:I don't want to upset you before you get your braces on but I absolutely hated it. It was rather painful. I guess the pain level depends on how much pain you have ever been in. The comfort level depends on whether you've just had them tightened or if your mouth has rested awhile. BUT on a positive note think about how nice and straight your teeth will be. I am very thankful for the straightness--depending on how much having straight teeth means to you the pain will be worth it in the end.
Reply:Nothing to freak out about...I've had mine for 3 years...It doesnt hurt to get them on at all..U feel uncomfortable with the seperators on but you'll get use to It..also when the brackets come on they scratch on your inner lip but they give you wax to make it feel better..and that only lasts for about a week and then you'll be good..:)..I'd say when youget them tightened every month the pain is about a 3-10
Reply:Getting the separators won't hurt at all. However about getting the braces on.. Your teeth are going to hurt for a while.. 6/10. But

after a few days they should be fine. Also when you get your braces tightened your teeth might hurt for a few days. Don't eat anything rough for a few days if your teeth hurt. It will just increase the pain. Total pain - 6/10. But they're fine after a while. I'm getting mine off next December.
Reply:Hey,

I had to have braces for three years, they aren't that bad! I didn't like the separators because I felt like I always had meat stuck in my teeth so I would always pick at them. The braces will cut into your lips for a little while, but you will get used to it. I would say that they are only sore for like a day or two after they are on. I would rate the pain at about a 4 sometimes up to a 6... it depends I guess... Well, hope that you enjoy your new Smile!
Reply:on the t.v they said that they made some new braces and that no matter how old you are the time is 2 years and that they aint hurt to much
Reply:The separators are actually worse than the braces. Trust me, after a week you can't remember the braces are there. Separators on the other hand are horrible. (good thing you only have them for a week then you get them off)
Reply:the first 2 days or maybe even the first week will be painful, when i first got braces i didnt even want to close my mouth or bite anything. i fear i would look like a dork n dat my mouth would look all deform but its nothin after u get used to them. when i got them removed i actually missed them lol
Reply:Spacers aren't too bad. I'd say a 3-5, depending on how badly crowded your teeth are, and how pain tolerant you are. Some people think they're the worst part, I beg to differ. You'll be fine. Basically, they put the spacers on a stick-like thing, then force it in. Fun, fun, fun. It is not that bad. You'll recover in a week or less (average) and during then, you'll have to be eating soup, mashed potatoes, and liquids in general.

Braces, now braces... ugh.. I hate them, well when I got them put on. The first couple days are hell. Like an 8-9. Tylenol is like the only option to make it tolerable. Then again, depending how bad your teeth are, you could have no pain! It all depends. It took me 2 and a half weeks to get fully recovered and eat solid food. Until then I was on energy drinks, soup, and yogurt shakes. Stock up on yogurt, pudding, and jello. First, they pull out your spacers. Then they clean your teeth. Then they glue each individual bracket on with this lime-like tasting glue substance. Then, they put a wire through. It should take about an hour and fortyfive minutes.

You'll do fine. It gets better. You'll live. Just have some tylenol at hand, and a pastime you enjoy doing, because you won't feel like doing anything at all. Watch TV, play videogames, do anything that will take them off your mind.

Cheers.
Reply:Hey Lisa!

I just got braces on Thursday! I had spacers and sorry to tell you, but they do hurt! Some people say that spacers hurt worse then braces and to me, that's how it was. When you first get them you are like whoa what is in between my teeth but they don't hurt! Then a few hours later... HERE COMES THE PAIN! It's not unbearable but it hurts! Then after about 3 days it's like whatever! I got them the 20th of December and was able to eat on Christmas (turkey!)

Ok now the braces! I broke my bracket because it didn't hurt so I ate crackers and I have to go to the orthodontist Wednesday! FOLLOW THE ORTHODONTIST'S INSTRUCTIONS EVEN IF THEY DON'T HURT! Clean your braces (I have to buy a new wire cleaner(interproximal brush) and am getting a waterpik and electric brush) Brush your teeth 3x's a day for 3 minutes and floss (they will tell you how to floss!)

HAPPY NEW YEARS! God Bless and have a wonderful year!

p.s. my bff's name is Lisa too!
Reply:seriously...its so not that serious lol. I asked around and I was totally afraid to get them on but when I did its was soooooo bearable. Seperators hurt a little b cuz its the 1st time ur teeth will b moving but U WILL LIVE. That pain was about a 4 or a 5 and half the time u will 4get u have them. Same with braces. The only uncomfortable thing is sitting there with ur mouth open for 45 minutes. After that though it aches and ur mouth feels really full use some wax and orajel and in 3 days u will b super used 2 them! O yea every 6 weeks they will put on thicker wires which feels like they r tightening...it is a little uncomfortable but nothing advil can't fix.
Reply:The orthodontist makes sure you get used to the brace before he tries anything too heavy.

At first it will just feel strange, but later (maybe a day) it will start to hurt. That pain lasted me about 5 or 6 days. It will be very sore to eat, so you need to think about soft foods.

Then every month when it gets tightened it will hurt again, but once you've had the initial pain, this pain won't seem as bad and it still hurts, but you tend to get used to it.

As for getting it put on, a series of metal things (you know the small bits on the teeth) will be glued onto your teeth and that's fine, the glue tastes horrible though. And also, elastics at the back (metal things which go around two teeth near the back) will be glued in as well which is pain free too.

Then the wire will be twisted around the metal squares on your teeth, this does not hurt but is slightly uncomfortable.

Then you're done! It doesn't hurt getting it put on, just afterwards.

You'll go back about every month to have the wire taken off and put back on, slightly tighter each time. Which again is fine, and you won't be nervous because you'll have had it done before.

Oh, for the after pain, most painkillers work fine for me. Just a tip if it gets bad, like it sometimes does for me.

So yeah, that's it! Good luck - you should be fine! =)
Reply:I had them. My orthodontist was really great about it. He put them on and gave me time in between each set. It's hard to explain the process, as you are just staring at the ceiling the whole time, but just remember to relax, keep breathing, and don't worry. After you get them on, it may be hard to bite down. It kind of feels like you just got a whole new mouth! Keep your tongue away from the braces--try not to feel around too much because your tongue won't be used to having metal around and it may seem sharp. For the first week (or however long you need to) rely heavily on soft foods--drinks, milkshakes, ice cream, etc. Brush very lightly. It may be very difficult to brush, but do your best. Don't start flossing right away, but do start after you feel comfortable--that's very important.

I took about a month to get FULLY used to my braces. After the hard first week, I started eating a lot of mac and cheese and other soft foods. I still couldn't chew well, though. By week three, I felt like I could start trying some medium-softness foods. And by the end of the month, I felt like I had braces forever!

Trust me--when I first got them on, I thought I would starve for the time I was going to have them on, but after that first month, I felt perfectly fine. Time flies by while they're on and before you know it, they're off and, surprisingly, that is hard to get used to...having your normal mouth back!

Remember...don't rush back into eating hard foods. Go with what feels most comfortable! Good luck!
Reply:spacers r much worse. braces only hurt wen theyr moving ur teeth. they dont hurt 24/7. it just feels really weird and it feels like theres stuff stuck on ur teeth and it takes like 3 weeks to be able to eat fully again. right after u get em' on, go get a smoothie or shake or something like that...u'll c y.

good luck!!

ITS NOT THAT BAD DONT WORRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Reply:Don't worrie about braces there easy. The pain isn't that bad for what you end up with in the end (a Beautiful Smile).

The Spacers are kind of a funny feeling when they put them in it barely hurts they'll get them in before you realize that they

have them all done. Also don't worrie about popping them out it is easier for them if they stay in though don't stress it if you

loose one or all of them.

Helpful hints:

~ Don't get yellow or even sometimes orange rubber-bands, they tend to make your teeth look more yellow then you need. I tended to go with gray toward the end of having braces, they tend to not stick out when you smile though the colors are lots of fun at the start.

~ Take some Tylenol or pain reliever of some sort about 30 minutes to and hour before going to the Ortho it will help a lot when the tighten them and also when they put them on.

Just remember no sticky candy, popping a bracket isn't that fun though it is easily fixed.

Hope this helps

Have fun with the Braces you'll be happy afterward trust me.
