Braces.....?

Just got braces, but theye are the ones where you take them in and out, they have blocks all up the side of the teeth so i cant actually put my bottom and top teeth together!

It is so weird,i know i'll get used to them, but my mouth is a funny shape,i cant swallow or talk, let alone breathe ! lol :(

Alot of spit fills up in my mouth, and as soon as i open my mouth,it all comes pouring out!

My ortho said i had to wear it all night and day,but im giving up already,i've only had them in 25 minutes!

As im home taught, this is giving me reason not to go out at all.I cant speak,i write everything down on paper.

Can't i just wear them at night?I really cannot go anywhere!

Please help :( support?

Thanks

Braces.....?
You don't have braces. From what you described, it sounds like you have a Twin-Block functional appliance. You are right that these are not easy to get used to wearing. I have an instruction sheet that I hand out to the patients on how to get used to wearing them because it will be impossible for you to start wearing them at night and have them stay in. You will find them under your bed in the morning.

Here is how to wear it from my Instruction Sheet:

Twin Block appliances should be worn full time except eating, cleaning and during contact sports. With the correct number of hours of wear you will soon be aware of the improvements in the position of the teeth. The upper and lower appliances must both be worn together at all times.

Don’t give up if you find it difficult to wear the appliances full time immediately. It’s OK to work up to wearing it full time, as long as you keep to it.

Here is a guideline to follow in working up to full-time wear:

Day 1 and 2: --- 4 hours each day

Day 3 and 4: --- 6 hours each day

Day 5 and 6: --- 8 hours each day

End of first week: --- Full daytime wear

Wear full daytime for one week and if there are no problems, then begin wearing at night. The ideal goal is to wear it 20 hours each day.

Some Twin Blocks have expansion screws in the upper appliances. We will give you instructions on when and demonstrate how to turn the screw(s) on the upper appliance.

Speech

Keep your teeth together. You can practice learning how to talk well with your appliance by reading aloud 5 – 10 minutes every night. Talk slowly enough so that you can talk clearly. It really will get easier.

Lips

While the appliance is in your mouth, it is important to try to learn to keep your lips together. Having your lips closed aids in moving your teeth into the correct position.

Care of your braces

The appliances are removed for toothbrushing. Clean the appliance with your toothbrush carefully. If appliances are removed for eating or sport they must be placed in suitable container. If an appliance is lost or broken you will be charged for the replacement. These appliances are expensive and must be looked after if treatment is to be successful.
Reply:oh honey, as long it is removable appliance so ur case is not that difficult to treat....

you have to know that all the difficulties in wearing this device are just temporary for three days, more or less....

just keep wearing it and u'll be fine.... ur smile deserves this..
Reply:Well, I have braces and some of the problems you brought up I can agree with. Like not being able to close my jaw without hitting the blocks, talking is hard too, and smiling looked a great deal better before I got them;)... But it is just about getting use to them, and you will already look and sound better.

I've had these braces for about 9 months now and I don't really notice them anymore. After all, the main purpose of the braces is to move your teeth in the right position, and once they do your braces won't be hitting on each other anymore! For the first couple of months it may be uncomfortable and feel totally messed up xP But if you feel it needs to be taken care of, I suggest you ask your dentist ;) Just think about those perfect teeth you'll get in the end!
Reply:Hi Bexxi! I know that can be hell of a problem but it isn't irresolvable. there are ways to deal and give yourself a good period of bracing!!

1) don't try chewing from day 1

2) start swallowing from the time you read this with the braces on

3) start practicing speaking in front of a mirror 1/2 an hour a time and then speak out aloud in your room as you do this

4) only chew once your mouth starts accepting the plate with braces

5) excessive salivation is but obvious once a foreign thing is suspected in your mouth

6) lastly, think of those who wear it all the life once there is an all teeth loss and get a morale boost up!!
Reply:I never had braces like yours, but I know they are such a pain in the neck! Here is what I would suggest.

1) Only wear them when your in the house, and I mean.. like when your at school or at a job.. you probably can go without. Only wear them when your at home and when you go to sleep.

2) Once you get used to them, it becomes much easier to talk and eat and breath.

3) Just wear them as much as you can when you really don't need to be talking to a whole lot of people.. Like when your just at home with the family and not anywhere too important.

If it is still hard to function, I would seriously calling your ortho to get a better fix on them. :D I hope I helped.

Oh remember, the more you do wear them, the faster they come off. Really! :D
Reply:hi. my brother has had this problem for years. email him for advice!!!!

Reply:dont give up, if you made the move to get the mouth piece you need to see it through. 3 years of permanent braces isnt fun either
