Braces????

I'm getting braces on thursday. I have lotz of questions.

What are the steps in putting braces on???DOes it hurt when you put in the metal bands?I have a crown on my front tooth, will it affect it???What is it like?

Braces????
relax, braces are fun and an attention getter once you get used to them! ☺ i wont lie, you are going to be sore the first day or two after you get them. also, if you start having to wear rubber bands those hurt as well. it feels kind of strange at first and you may have trouble eating, i couldnt even eat a hamburger which was only the meat and bun. expect to eat only sippable soup, or something else liquid the first few days, ok? it will be painful. be sure to take a couple of tylenol/advil/etc right before they get started. for me, about 3 hours after they put them on, i was in terrible pain. when you get them on they will first put in a bit to keep your mouth open. then they apply the brackets to your tooth and will hold a little light against it to set the cement. then the wires go through and they will put your colors on. you may not get all your brackets at once either so be prepared for that. i expected a full set of braces when i went to have mine done but even after 6 months i still dont have brackets on 6 of my teeth. be excited--yes, it hurts at first and a little when you get them tightened but braces are fun! good luck ♥

ps i forgot to tell you, get some cloroseptic throat spray too. spray it in your mouth, swish with it then spit out. this stuff is great, it will numb your mouth when you are in pain.

Reply:write all these questions down so to remind you when you go on Thursday and you can get the correct answers from your dentist.
Reply:1)Do cleanings hurt? Brushing your own teeth doesn't hurt, it feels just like brushing your teeth without the brace. If the dentist cleans them with a rotating electric brush, it can make the edge of your gums slightly sore for about one day

2)Does getting it tightened hurt? It's a bit tender for the first day or so.

3)How do you use a palette expander and does it hurt? I don't know, I didn't have this.

4)Do spacers hurt in the back of your mouth? You can feel that there's something in between your teeth, and it's a little bit sore at first.

5)What type of food can you NOT eat? Avoid really sticky stuff like chewing gum and toffee, because they'll get stuck to it. Chewing very hard things, like ice and boiled sweets, can break the brackets off your teeth.

6)How does the dental wax feels? It's useful for covering up bits of the brace that are rubbing the inside of your mouth, so it actually feels quite nice.

7)How do you floss with them? I didn't floss with them, but the dentsit gave me a special toothbrush with a very small head, which I used to clean round the brackets and in between my teeth.

8)Which medication would you recommend? I didn't take any medication

9)What are the names of the appliances that fit in your mouth and the discription? I had: fixed upper and lower appliances. These had metal brackets (small, square bits of metal that were glued to my teeth), a wire that went round the outside of them and that was attached with small rubber bands; I also had a "Harvold" (not sure of the spelling) this was a large plastic thing that fitted inside my upper and teeth and pushed my lower jaw forward (I only wore this at night); And I had something that I called "whiskers" although I don't think that's it's proper name. It had 2 prongs that fitted into little metal tubes that were attached to my top back teeth, and two longer bits that came out of my mouth and round the outside of my cheeks. These had hooks on the end and I fitted an elastic strap that went round the back of my head to the hooks (I only wore this at night too).

10)How long does take for braces to be put on your teeth? I think about half an hour for the brackets to be fitted to my top teeth and half an hour for the bottom teeth.

11)What are the different stages of braces please explain each stage? I don't know, I think it depends on what type you wear.

12)Do the injections hurt? They sting a little bit at first, for about a minute or so.
Reply:My daughter had braces put on her teeth and she is the biggest baby when it comes to the dentist. Do you know what? she was a real trouper, didn't hurt at all and I really believe she thought it was really interesting. It shouldn't affect the crown at all. Also my daughter used to get the metal bands changed and had different colors in her mouth.
Reply:"What are the steps in putting braces on???"

They put bands around the teeth they think need them. Then they glue the brackets on your teeth. Then they put a wire on and secure it with elastics (you pick the color).

"DOes it hurt when you put in the metal bands?"

Sort of but it's not that bad really. It's just uncomfortable.

"I have a crown on my front tooth, will it affect it???"

Maybe, not really sure though. These are the sorts of things the orthodontist would have gone over with you in the consultation.

"What is it like?"

I loved watching the nurse put the replacement bands on my teeth every month and getting to pick the colors. Other than that it was just irritating. I found the first few days with head gear sucked. I had so much Advil so be prepared for that.
Reply:They glue the brackets onto your teeth, put the wires in, cut them so they don't poke you %26amp; cause painful mouth sores. Your teeth will feel sore for a day or 2 but it's nothing unbearable. When they change the bands every 5-6 weeks, they take the wires out, you brush, they check your teeth %26amp; put the bands back on. Again they'll be sore for a few days so just eat soft food %26amp; you'll be fine. As for a crown, I never had 1.
Reply:I wore braces when I was 13 for 3 years. First they will put little rubberbands inbetween your teeth usually a few days before the actual metal braces, it feels weird like you have food stuck there but it's not really painful. Then you get the metal ones, some go all the way around the teeth, some just connect on the front of the teeth, they have really awesome colored wires now! They do hurt a little at first until you get used to them, and after an adjustment they hurt some, sorta like if you got something stuck in your teeth really hard. It won't affect your crown at all, it will go over the crown. You might get a retainer too, those hook in the braces in the back ones usually. Sometimes after you are done with braces you have to wear a retaining wire for while to make sure the movements stay.

PS you can brush your teeth as usual, no sticky stuff or gum, and for flossing they give you floss threaders, you loop the floss in a stiffer kinda loop, similiar to the eye on a needle, and pull the looper in between your teeth, that way the floss comes through with it and you can be underneath the wires and go tooth to tooth.
Reply:These are the basic steps.

1st-if you can't keep your mouth open for 2 hours they put something in your mouth to keep in open.

2nd-put the brackets on(you could end up with ones that go on your back teeth which really hurts)

3rd-put the wires on

yes it hurts.I recommend taking pain killers before you get it done.not likely to affect crown. It hurts a lot the first couple days and when you get it tightened. You can't eat a lot of foods(well you can but you risk breaking the bracket and having to pay to get it fixed)
