Braces??..?

I have had metal in my mouth for almost half of my life. My teeth were absolutely repulsive when I first started getting work done on them (Age 7). First came the bottom expander, then came the top expander, then came the bottom retainer, and then came the top retainer.. so on and so forth until at age 10 I got all my braces on. I have had my bottom ones on longer than my tops. My teeth have been really starting to look excellent, but my orthodontist keeps adding months and months on. I was told several times "next month they are coming off" for half a year. My bottom teeth are near perfect, my top look straight but when I run my tongue across them they still feel a little crooked. I am starting to get really fed up. My boyfriend just got his off, and now I feel even uglier.


Is there a way I can tell when my braces are going to come off, because, clearly my orthodontist has no idea.

Try to be patient, I had to wear mine for almost 9 years, altogether, your orthodontist cannot tell you an exact date, because it is very different with every person, it depends on how your teeth are growing, setting, and so on. Don´t worry, I got fed up with my braces, too (I was even 19 years old!), but today, I have perfect teeth. Remember, it is not only for the looks, they get regulated, but quitting too early will also cause you big problems when you are older with chewing and hygiene. For sure, you´ll want good teeth when you are in your 30´s Believe me, I´m 40 now and it was worth it, this is a very short time of your life, you will have to wear them, and it sounds like it won´t be too long anymore.

Reply:omg my orthodontist is the same way i was supposed to get mine off before school started and there still on but the orthodontist leave them on so that they dont move when you get them off just where your bands and everything and you will be fine
Reply:I don't think anyone but your Ortho can tell you when they will come off. My second kid is wearing them now and my first just got hers off after several years of heavy work. They were impatient too. I have a friend that has a kid that wore them from 2nd grade until his senior year. It is getting old for you i am sure....but you'll be happier with the results of you follow through to the end.





My older sister wore them when she was young. She didn't wear them long enough and didn't follow up with the retainers like she should have. She is wearing them again now in her mid 40's.

Thing is in about the first few months my teeth were like practically straight but I still needed to wear them for 2 more years, thats because it need to set like that.





I wouldn't rush, I know its annoying but in the long run its great to have nice teeth for the rest of your life (so remember to wear your retainers otherwise all that hard work will be for nothing)





I'm sure your boyfriend doesn't mind about your braces, alot of people have braces and they dont look ugly.





And you should confront your ortho about the date he will take them off, as a patient you have a right to know and any question you ask should be answered truthfully.

Reply:Orthodontists are the worst. I two orthodontist nightmare stories. I have paid over $10,000 for these (supposedly top orthodontist) experiences. My teeth are still crooked. If anyone knows a good orthodontist in San Diego let me know.
Reply:All I can say is - do exactly what the Ortho's say !! I had braces for 2.5 years myself !! Try to hang in there ! The end result will be awesome !! Don't worry about others, only yourself ! As long as you are a good person -you will be beautiful forever - with or without braces !!
Reply:don't worry, i hav them too. they're not like glasses or something where you have very simple alternatives. and beleive me, why would anyone who could afford braces have even slightly crooked teeth when they are available? then when everyone has their braces off(which will happen) they'll be the ones with crooked teeth. don't worry, you're still young and lots of ppl still have braces : )
