Braces?!!?!?!?!?!?

So I'm getting braces pretty soon. I wanna know how they put it in and will it hurt? I heard it hurts alot when they tighten your braces and you will feel pressure? I also have no idea what I can eat and what I can't eat. I'm kind of worried of swallowing the pieces of my braces. My friend also had braces,he said it hurt and he ended up with a gap between his front teeth.

Braces?!!?!?!?!?!?
Well first they start by placing smoothing off your teeth with some kind of tool, and then they take these square metal brackets and glue them on and use a light gun to speed the drying process. Most of that part dose not hurt. When they place the bands on your back larger teeth they have you bite down on a plastic and metal tool so that it sets, they will also use glue on this. For the first week or two they probably wont use a wire or at least they didn't use it first on me.

As to when they tighten them once a month or so, depends of what they are trying to do. The pain lasts for a day or two three at most. I used pain killers any kind at the store will do. And try not to chew hard foods that will help a large amount.

Foods that you can eat are most everything that you can eat right now. But your Doctor should have a list of what they dint want you to eat. Gum, pop corn, taffy, and some other get stuck real easy. But I ate just about all my favorite foods. Some times tooth picks can help. But when they tighten the braces eat yogurts. Once they have your braces fully intact its kinda hard to swallow parts, and when they have the wire on its just really really hard for that to happen.

As long as you have a good doctor their shouldn't be a gap. Just stress that part to your doctor and he will try to pay attention to that request. But making sure that you and your teeth are happy should be their most important job.

Well I hope I answered some of your questions and braces are not all that bad just follow their directions and it will be shorter than usual.
Reply:they cement them on. that is painless. take lots of ibuprofen and you'll be fine.

I mean, your teeth are gonna be really sore and it will hurt but it doesn't last too long and it's not some kind of overwhelming pain or anything.

you'll be fine.

edit: they put a gap in my teeth too, but they closed it later. they just needed it to make certain everything was spaced and aligned and all and the two front teeth were centered.
Reply:Hahahah oh man I had braces SOOO long ago. But I will never forget the first day I got them. They hurt sooo bad, I couldn't even eat a french frie. The gap between the front teeth arent from the braces they are from a spacer.. if you get one. When they tighten them.. it hurts but not nearly as bad as the first day you get them.
Reply:The end result is PHENOMENAL so don't worry about pain the first few days you might find your self eating soup but that is not a good enough reason not to get them. The pain is bearable to some extent.
Reply:it hurts the day after...stock up on yogurt and advil!

ya it's gonna hurt a little each time and for ur friend...probably didn't wear his retainers...shame shame shame they'll tell u what u can and can't eat.

w.e tho i ate everything when they told me not 2 then again mayb that's why i had them on 4 4 and a half years

not fun
Reply:Okay. what they will do is clean off the teeth a little. then they will put the cement on and the bracket and dry it into place. after they do all the brackets they will slide the wire in. When you first get them it is uncomfortable because you are not use to the tension. But after a while its fine. Also when tightening it is a little pressure but not much and after a while it won't even bother you. At first i reccomend eating softer foods such as mashed potatoes; soup.. you know

Hope I Helpedd
Reply:ok first of all it does not hurt when they put them on but when you do start eating something for the few first weeks it'll hurt a bit because your teeth are moving and you only get a gap if you have two crooked teeth next to each other :] hope this helps
Reply:don't worry about them :) You might feel a slight discomfort for the first 2 or so weeks, but it'll soon go away.

It didn't really hurt when they put it on, but it was a bit awkward though. You'll get used to it after like 2 weeks.
Reply:When you get them put on it hurts for a week or so. and when you get them tightened they feel tight and hurt a bit. But you'll get used to it. You wont swallow your braces pieces unless you do something stupid.
Reply:They won't hurt too much going in, but you may be sore for a few days. There's no need to worry about swallowing pieces, since the brackets are not only attatched to the wire, but also "glued" to your teeth.

You should probably not eat a lot of sticky foods, as the braces become quite difficult to clean.
Reply:Don't worry so much! Yes it will hurt a bit for a day or two when they put them in and when they tighten them. That's your teeth moving around but Tylenol should help a bit. You do feel some pressure when they tighten it but nothing too intense. When they put the braces on they glue boxes on your teeth and add the wire and the elastics to hold it in place. As for what you can eat anything super hard is out of the question (almonds, raw carrots). GUm and super chewy stuff (like Starbursts) are also not wise to eat. And if your braces do break you probably will notice way before you swallow anything. And the results will be great! My teeth look way better now than they did when I started braces.
Reply:They just glue things to your teeth and connect them with a wire. For some people they hurt, i guess. For me, it bothered me sometimes, but for the most part, i got used to it. When they tightened them the first couple of times.. it bothered me when i was about to sleep and just lying down. I took Advil so i could stop feeling the pressure.

Braces shouldn't leave you a gap between your teeth. Your friend probably didn't wear his retainers when he got them off. My teeth looks great now! i'm glad i got braces.
Reply:ok well they dont hurt the first day once you get them on but eat alot before 2nd day is death so smothieesapsihfef== my best friend haha cant spell today ahh! you dontt really feel pressure untill you get a chaaiin they hurts like hell you wont! swallow a piece of your braces trust me i though i would also in the beginning you should eat anything hard or sticky because your mouth it will hurt but once you get use to it you can eat everything you normally eat and i know the dentist is like noooo! dont eat anything sticky or chewy or sour or good of popcorn crap dont believe them im getting my braces off in a week ( YEAH ) and ive only lost a bracket once and they was when i was in the waiting room being stupid with a jawbreaker ahhh! so anyways good luck trust me it wont hurt they are actually pretty sweet. %26lt;3 best of luck !!! =] - charlette%26lt;3
Reply:relaaaaaaax! I had braces for....well for ever! since 8th grade (im now in college and i STILL have them! ha-ha) Well seriously relaxx! haha it doesnt hurt when they put it the first time, and when they tighten it, it doesn't hurt when they do it (well that is if your orthodentist is not a violent torturing maniac), but for a few days after, you will feel a strong pressure and speccially the first times, well it "hurt" me but be strong! ha! And for the swallowing bit, i never did! i don't think it's possible! and if you swallow a piece, it's not dangerous anyways!!
Reply:id like to tell u it will b okay but i cant... i have a serious tolerance for pain and i think braces hurt! u will be sore and u cant chew solid food for a few days, your mouth will get cut by the brackets which will cauz weird cuts bumps and holes in your mouth, but other than that ull be totalyy fine. they put them on by stick some gluelike stuff on your teeth and then sticking a bracket onto it, then they put a funny light on the tooth to make the glue dry (they do this with each tooth), then they put in a wire, then they close the doors of the braces (hurts when you feel the wire tighten) for the first like week they will feel huge but dont worry soon u get used to them... im sure other answerers will sugar coat things but im telling it like it is! good luck and dont worry they stop hurting soon enough (or not jkjk) best of wishes!
Reply:I've had braces for like a half of a year now, and it doesn't really hurt when you first get them on, but the days after are like hell. You don't have to worry about swallowing anything that comes off of your braces. Everything is secured tightly... unless you bite something really hard or eat something that's really frozen. (I ate a frozen magic bar, and I broke off one of my brackets :P) If you get rubber bands... oh the fisrt like four days you wear them, it feels worse than when you first got your braces on. When they tighten the braces, it's like getting them over again. It's not that it hurts when you're not doing anything with your mouth, but only when you bite down or eat.

Hope this helps and best of luck. :)
Reply:they basically glue them on. it doesn't hurt during THAT procedure.

when they tighten it, it may or may not hurt much, it depends on how [bad] you're teeth are. but it doesn't hurt right away, and you don't really feel that it hurts, unless you bite down on something, or press your teeth.

i suggest eating soft foods, for the first week you get them, and whenever they tighten. stock up on things like soup, oatmeal, yogurt, pudding.. etc. do NOT eat hard things, especially the first week.

but you notice as time goes on, that the days of pain lessen. for me, pain lasts about 4 days, before, it was about a week.

dont worry about swallowing a bracket or something. as long as you don't munch on hard candy, or hard stuff in general, you should be fine. just watch what you eat. easy on the gum, limit hard stuff (im a jolly rancher fan, so i let it melt x]), and most importantly, listen to what your orthodontist advises.

then again, my ortho says DON'T EAT GUM AND POPCORN AND DON'T DRINK SODA.. but i do anyway. (;

but in moderation.

good luck! i hope i helped. (:

and don't worry, going through this is all worth it in the end, you get a killer smile! (:
Reply:The orthodontist will have to put a thing in your mouth so he's able to reach your molars. Then he'll have a type of clear glue on the brackets and place them on your teeth. Then he'll insert the wire which is what hurts because it's so tight. You can't drink soda or it'll make your brackets rust. No gum either- it might get stuck.(I still chew gum anyways though.) The orthodontist will probably give you an instructive packet or something for the do's and don'ts.
Reply:dont worry i dont think its possible to swallow the pieces of your braces; you'll notice after you've had them for like a week i think. heres some advice though: when you first get them on it wont hurt, and you'll want to bite down and feel them and stuff but DONT BITE ON THEM ON THE FIRST FEW DAYS!!! on the first few days of having them i only ate things you can drink like yogurt and pudding and stuff...and i mean drink! i tried to used a spoon but if it even hits your tooth a little by accident its like a huge surge of pain. unless after a few hours have gone by and you've realized that your one of the lucky people to have really good pain resistance dont bother trying to eat the harder foods which you normally eat- it will just cause you more pain!!! sorry if this is like freaking you out, i think how much pain you feel is different from person to person...but yeah...for me, i was like a rabid animal after getting them on they literally hurt like hell for me but good luck im really not trying to scare you hope everything goes well :]
Reply:Well they usually aren't very tight when you first get them on. When they put them on there is brackets on all teeth that are required but it is different for every individual. Then in the back two teeth there usually isnt a bracket but a thingamajig(idk what the actual name is lol!) that holds the main wire in. Then they wrap wire on each individual bracket to tightem them and to keep the main wire more secure. Then they put on the rubberbands of whichever color you choose. I'd suggest a darker color, because lighter colors stain and make your teeth look yellow. Then your done! They usually give you wax or something of the sort to put on to keep them from giving you sores in your mouth. I rarely used it except for the first few days.

The things they say you shouldn't eat are hard pretzels, although ive found that the pretzel sticks are ok. Gum, they say that suger free sticks less but ive found that sugar gum sticks less. You aren't supposed to eat popcorn cernels. I wouldn'nt reccomend breaking this rule. Laffy Taffy is very sticky and you should never eat that. Then there is caramel but if you are careful nothing happens. And then anything else hard or sticky like jawbreakers. I've found that the ones ive mentioned that i didnt follow are ok to do because nothing happens.

Don't worry about peices falling off and getting swallowed because its just not possible. If they are which rarely happens(its never happened to me and ive had mine for over a year.) and you happen to swallow it they are made to disolve in extreme ammounts of stomach acid. So if you happen to get the stomach flu they wont dissolve.

i hope i helped and i hope you dont have too much pain. i never did only on my bottom braces once. Good luck and dont worry! It's not that bad. Good luck again. Best of wishes!
Reply:ok i may not remember all of it (i got my braces in the 3rd grade and im now in 9th) so they might have started to use new tools or something but this is generally what happens:

when i got mine done, they used a special type of dental glue that would keep the braces on..but my orthodontist used this other thing where they would kinda bang at it so it would stay (probably one of the painful parts for me, dont worry it's not too bad and they probably wont use it on you but if you do you will feel a little pressure) then they will let the glue sit and dry so you will have to keep your mouth open for a little bit of time but dont worry, they use a special thing (i have NO clue what it's called, im not the best at dental terms) to keep your mouth wide open. when the wiring is on, you will feel a little pressure but you should be fine....just make sure you dont eat or drink for an hour after you get them on so you can be sure that the glue is completely dry

now this is the part that i can really remember.....the first night i had braces, my mouth hurt like a beast! i couldnt even chew a soft cookie. i would definately recommend something easy to eat (soup possibly)

make sure before you get your braces, you can eat whatever you want to...you're gonna miss it. most of the things you can't eat are candies....there are a lot of them you can still eat, but there are many that you can't eat. try to avoid foods with a lot of caramel inside, but a little won't hurt you. a few other things you shouldnt eat are gum and popcorn. temptations to eat it all will kick in when all of your friends are enjoying some popcorn and you arent. but trust me, it doesnt bring the best results. many times i had seen kids in the dentists office getting a ton of work done because they gave in. if you are going to eat gum, make sure it is sugarless...there is a type of gum called freedent (you can buy it anywhere) that is made for people with dental work. it wont stick to your braces and youll still get to enjoy gum!

about the gaps stuff, i never had a gap, and i dont have any friends who had braces and used to have a gap...so im unsure if i can help you on that part....sorry =(
