?...Braces...?

I got my braces taken off today, and on the inside, middle of my bottom teeth, they put in what they called a "permanent retainer." It only goes across about 6 of my teeth, and they told me that it would be in there for forever. Why did they put that in there, if I have a regualr retainer, and why did they only put one there and nowhere else? Does everybody get them?

?...Braces...?
I don't know how old you are, but age sometimes will have a bearing on that. Also, it depends on how bad your case was, how much they had to move the teeth. In all orthodontic cases some relapse will occur over time. Your retainer is necessary immediately following treatment to prevent relapse. If they put in a "permanent" retainer, it is most likely that you have a more severe case than most. Weather or not you are young or old, had a tough ortho case or an easy one, if you want your teeth to stay where they are you will have to wear a retainer for the rest of your life. If you stop wearing your retainer even ten years later it is still possible to relapse. Probably not as bad as if you never wore a retainer. Just remember, our bodies change our whole lives, and if you want something to stay the same you have to do something to force it to, such as, wear a retainer.
Reply:i dont have one and i had braces twice. honestly, that's crazy to have something there forever. i would get a second opinion. go to some other orthodontist and see if you can get another type of retainer. good luck and im sorry this happened.
Reply:It depends on the Orthodontist. I had a retainer that I took in and out. They put the permanent one in there so your teeth won't move again and so you don't have to wear the other one. When they say you have to wear it forever that's not true but you do have to wear it a long time.
