?...Braces...?

Last Monday, the orthodontist told me that I could get my braces taken off, and I'm going in for that tomorrow, but last Monday, when he told me I could get em taken off, he took the bands off of my back teeth. They are now pretty sore, and it hurts when I chew food with them. Is this normal?

?...Braces...?
Totally normal, trust me, I had them twice, it would be weird if they werent sore. Congrats on getting them off too!! SMILE!!! :)

Reply:yes
Reply:Everything about braces is sore...haha..but ya, it's normal.
Reply:yup
Reply:I dont know if its 'normal', but i didnt feel anything like that when my braces came off. Stay away from hard foods like chips and nuts. You could have ice cream if that makes you feel better, but the important thing is to just give your orthodontist a call. Did you get retainers? If so, do NOT make the mistake of forgetting to put them on at night. I did for about 6 months, and i had to get new ones (old ones dont fit) and i have to wear them for an extra 3 years!

?...Braces...?

I got my braces taken off today, and on the inside, middle of my bottom teeth, they put in what they called a "permanent retainer." It only goes across about 6 of my teeth, and they told me that it would be in there for forever. Why did they put that in there, if I have a regualr retainer, and why did they only put one there and nowhere else? Does everybody get them?

?...Braces...?
I don't know how old you are, but age sometimes will have a bearing on that. Also, it depends on how bad your case was, how much they had to move the teeth. In all orthodontic cases some relapse will occur over time. Your retainer is necessary immediately following treatment to prevent relapse. If they put in a "permanent" retainer, it is most likely that you have a more severe case than most. Weather or not you are young or old, had a tough ortho case or an easy one, if you want your teeth to stay where they are you will have to wear a retainer for the rest of your life. If you stop wearing your retainer even ten years later it is still possible to relapse. Probably not as bad as if you never wore a retainer. Just remember, our bodies change our whole lives, and if you want something to stay the same you have to do something to force it to, such as, wear a retainer.
Reply:i dont have one and i had braces twice. honestly, that's crazy to have something there forever. i would get a second opinion. go to some other orthodontist and see if you can get another type of retainer. good luck and im sorry this happened.
Reply:It depends on the Orthodontist. I had a retainer that I took in and out. They put the permanent one in there so your teeth won't move again and so you don't have to wear the other one. When they say you have to wear it forever that's not true but you do have to wear it a long time.

Braces????

i got my braces on may 10th 2006 when do you think i will get the rubber band things?

Braces????
the rubber bands or elastics...actually there are several kinds...the elastic modules, for retaining the wires in their brackets...the e-chain, for closing short spaces, and so on and so forth...actually it's the dentists' call when to put the elastics. but the main key for an orthodontic procedure to be effective is friction....and rubbers or elastics are known to be high on this....thus some dentists don't use elastics. Furthermore, some types of elastics are used during the finishing stage of the orthodontic treatment.
Reply:it depends on your teeth.

none of us will be able to tell you
Reply:usually depends on how much work need to be done to help the teeth, i never had to have braces but several of my friends have had to, and a couple didn't have to wear the rubber bands but one of them had to. the doctor should tell you if you have to or not,and good luck with your braces!
Reply:depends on how bad your teeth are.
Reply:You only need them to move your jaw or teeth. For example, if your teeth do not align exactly, they will put rubber bands in to shift your jaw. Not everyone needs them, but everyone I know, (including me) has needed them, lol. They are not that big of a deal just a little sore at first. Unless you get major rubber bands goin in all sorts of directions. But us girls are tough!! lol

Braces!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...

I'm getting braces soon please give me all the advice you can and how was it? Did it hurt? Thanks!

Braces!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...
i have had braces for about....1 year and 5 months and what i can say about them is:

-the first time you get it it hurts; but it would hurt more if your teeth are like super crooked like how mine were, so just take some tylenol, and youll make it thorough the day.

-never get clear, unless you take REALLY good care of your teeth, cuz after a while clear turns yellow-ish cuz of the food stains.

- white is a good color if you ever want your braces to be subtle, like in school pictures.

- RANDOM COLORS ARE THE AWESOME PART! if your orthodentist lets you have like every color she has. hehe.

- use them as an accessory with them. like if you have pink and red braces, wear like....red and pink bangles, or shoes! or clothes to match!

-after tightening, you might feel a little weird feeling in your mouth, but thats normal, and the pain would go away in a few days.

-the first 7 checkups hurt, but then afterwards, itll feel comfortable and awesome.

- make sure you eat soft foods, cuz seriously, it HURTS like a ***** if you eat something hard.

- and make sure you BRUSH YOUR TEETH daily, cuz food can get stuck in the little holes, and cracks and wires in between.

good luck with your new braces! =]]!
Reply:only the first few days. and eat a BIG meal before you get them. :) its not that bad you get used to them!
Reply:Not while you are getting them on. There is a lot of pressure, but no pain. Afterward, they are sore for a few days, because when your teeth move, your bone has to re-grow around them, but it isn't as bad as people make it sound. They only say it is to be dramatic and get attention. Lol.
Reply:Had braces twice, it doesn't really hurt. It's more uncomfortable than anything, it only gets sore when you get the power chain or new brackets. The dental wax is a real life saver for wires that poke and help you get used to the rubbing on your inner lips. And believe it or not, you will miss them when they come off.

FYI, don't get the clear or colored bands they turn dark.
Reply:it will hurt just a little for a little bit (2 days max) just take lots of advil

its so worth it, use wax (they'll give you some) on poking wires at the back, elastics are they worst when they snap its brutal getting them off kind of hurts (only he filing not the brackets being removed,) getting them tightened doesnt hurt as much as people say

retainers are brutal but dont hurt that much
Reply:It doesn't hurt getting them on, but your gums and teeth will probably be a little sore. It's hard to adjust to having all that metal in your mouth, but you really do. Take some Advil or something after you get them on, and eat soft stuff for the first couple of days. I think I stuck with yogurt and that kind of thing. They will probably give you wax to stick on the brackets, which helps minimize the rubbing against your gums...it helps somewhat, but it was kind of a pain to put on and get off, and I just roughed it out..you get used to it within a few days.

Make sure you do everything you can to keep them clean so you don't get cavities. It's a pain, but use the little loop thing to floss your teeth before you go to bed and brush your teeth often. You might want to keep floss and a mirror in your purse for after lunch because it's really easy for stuff to get stuck in the wires! (Don't worry, you get used to it!) What I used to do was avoid biting INTO things...like pizza, for example, or even sandwiches...you can cut or rip things into small pieces and put them inside your mouth so that nothing gets stuck in my front teeth by your having to bite into it. You learn for yourself what things are most likely to get stuck and what things you don't need to worry about.

DO follow their advice and avoid sticky things like salt water taffy and caramel apples (I wouldn't try biting into an apple-- slices are much easier!)

As for the bands-- they change them every appointment. I recommend getting the gray ones because they draw the least amount of attention to your teeth. Plus, sometimes the colored ones fade or get discolored and it looks gross.

Good luck, and remember how beautiful you will look when it's over!
Reply:it hurts for 1 day thats it.

then it'll hurt everynow and again but nothing a good old pain killer can't solve.

you can eat what you want, gum and coke dont do nothing. Just be careful when you bite hard stuff coz the back off mine came off.

really are worth it! I've had mine off about 3 years now I don't even need to wear the take out brace no more. But when you have yours taken off make sure you wear the retainer else your teeth will go back to normal.

WELL WORTH IT!
Reply:My daughter said the most painful part was having all 4 wisdom teeth AND 4 other teeth pulled before the braces went on. After that, she occasionally got sore but an ibuprofen took care of the pain. She is now in maintenance, she is wearing retainers all the time until October, then she will only have to wear the retainers 8-12 hours a day or night.

ADVICE, be ready to wear the retainers after the braces come off or your teeth will slowly move back to a crooked mess, for the rest of your life, according to my daughters OCC.
Reply:don't worry, they only hurt in the beginning. They don't hurt while you're getting them on, it only hurts after that. Its because your teeth are shifting. The pain is not so bad, but your ortho will probably advise you to take tylenol or advil if the pain is causing problems. Make sure you listen to the ortho when he is explaining how to keep them clean and stuff its very important. After the first week of having braces, you will be used to them and the pain will no longer affect you. When i had braces, my braces always cut up my cheek. If this happens to you, then you should know its normal. Your dentist might give you a special wax to apply on the parts of your braces that your cutting your cheek. But other than that, there will be very little pain. And your teeth will only feel sore when you get your wires tightened once every six weeks. good luck! :)
Reply:I'm going to be honest here, braces don't hurt when you get them on, but the next day your mouth will hurt like hell!Sorry, but it does.
Reply:they hurt for about the first week .... you get used to them. make sure that your orthodontist gives you a few packs of wax because the inside of your cheeks will blister, or mine did at least.

the pain totally pays off though. i got mine off a few weeks ago and my teeth were so beautiful!

Braces???????

will braces straighten your teeth 100% at the end?

Braces???????
not unless u get the most expensive ones they will. my friend has had braces every since i have known him, but when it was time to take them out, his teeth were not str8 at all
Reply:Yea..

Thats what there for..

lol..

But you have to make sure you get a good ortho..

:]]
Reply:yup , but you should find a good dentist =]
Reply:Yes Lex,if you got a good dentist, your problem is solve,he could help you out.
Reply:yes.

Braces...?

I've had braces for about 9 monthes, and I'm have to have them on for about 2 years or 24 monthes. I brush twice a day, floss daily, and gargle and I don't eat anything I'm not supposed to. I know this is odd, but are there any other things that I can do to speed up the proccess?

Braces...?
i have braces too. i do the same things you do. i'm supposed to have mine on for just about 3 years or so. you are doing everything right and i don't think that you can speed it up or your teeth will look worse when you get older
Reply:Sounds like you're doing all you can and you're doing great! Keep up the good work.
Reply:Nope............ Sadly it takes time...... Don't stress about it.
Reply:Orthodontics is slow work, unfortunately there's not much you can do to speed things up. Your teeth will move at the pace set by your doctor.
Reply:I don't know of anything to speed up the process. But, taking excellent care of your teeth with the braces is great. Pay special attention to the brackets, make sure you brush really well around them.
Reply:chew sugarless gum
Reply:You can't speed it up. They are moving your teeth around, and that takes time. You are lucky it's only two years for you. I had mine for 3 years and I have to wear a retainer for 6 months 24/7. You are doing a very good thing by following all the rules. That prevents the time you will need to wear the braces from becoming a longer "sentence" if you would like to call it. I'm kidding, by the way. I kinda liked my braces for a while.
Reply:no not really because i used to have braces and i tried to do something to speed it up but the dentist said it has to have time
Reply:No, it takes how long it takes. Trust me, 24 months may seem like a long time now, but it is such a brief instant in your life as a whole, and it pays off big time. it is a very small price to pay for such big benefits for the rest of your life.
Reply:No there isn't, but i bet you will have beautiful teeth when it's all over!

Focus on that!

Good Luck!
Reply:get them tightened every week
Reply:in a book written in the 1950's by Selvarajan Yesudian, Yoga %26amp; Health, one of his techniques of "mental imaging" before it became a catch word in the mainstream was to look into a mirror and see what you really see..then imagine changing that and each day, taking time to meditate that your body is changing this "aspect" to correct itself..I had buck teeth and the straightened up over a two year period and in that two year period, I was in the mirror each day imagining and visualizing as hard as I could..I cannot surely say that this was the reason my teeth straightened, however, I believe it was a positive influence upon whatever process did exist that straightened them out..

there are ladies in their 40's getting braces..it is far more a struggle later in life than getting them done earlier..it is hard to say you should be grateful that you can have this and the time to get them done...the wait will be worth it because a straight set of teeth is a nice thing..just make sure you take care of them to prevent decay or anything like that...

hard in this modern time, but sometimes the greatest thing we can do is actually be grateful for what we do have...not everyone can afford braces...when I was younger, it was not an option for me...I honestly feel that you are fortunate to have braces...enjoy the ride.
Reply:Talk to your orthodontist. He or she may have some ideas. If not, you are on the right track. Keep these habits and you will have them off as soon as they are supposed to be off. The last thing you want is to have them kept on for a longer period of time.
Reply:gosh u follow rules well!i have braces but i dont do any of that so!

o and u cant speed up the process!
Reply:i have braces too they suck but you cant speed up the process
Reply:Make sure you don't miss any of your appointments that will be the success of the treatment. Cleaning will protect your teeth from decay, but as far as straighten them out is all up to the work of your denst. Anyway enjoy them. I had to wear braces for a couple of years too. later on you will look back and love those pics.
Reply:nope. just stop thinking of it. i needed to use for 3 years. and i love using braces(i know its wierd im the only person who likes using braces) but the other day my dentist told that i will take my braces off in agust but i only used it for one year and a half! dont miss any day of dentist. and continue like that. good luck.
Reply:Don't worry about them, beauty is a state of mind!
Reply:no but be thankful you only have to have them for two years, i've had mine for anout three or four. and someone i knew had them for about euight years belieive it or not. good luck with your braces though.
Reply:No don't think so.
Reply:I don't think so. You're lucky its only 24 months! I got mine when I was 28 and had to wear them for 4-1/2 years. It was all worth it in the end and you will be so happy with your new smile! Keep up the good work, you're doing great!
Reply:Im going into 7th grade and have had braces for along time! I am actally one of the youngest kids who ever got braces . I was in 1st grade. My sister knocked out one of my teeth and soo i needed braces. i got them off my 5th grade year. and when I got my retainer it wasnt able to hook on my teeth cause my tooth was begining to come in. I was told that i would need them again in my 7th grade of school and Im getting them soon. I always thought there was a faster way to get rid of my braces but there really isnt. And if you think about it.....the longer they are on the better. Just keep brushing so you dont get yellow square stains on you teeth!

- me
Reply:I don't think. You'll just have to wait. My friend got braces that worked fast, but are really expensive.

Braces?????

i just got braces and i was wondering...does the intense pain of chewing ever STOP??? dude i cant even eat chef boyardee ravioli...can u recomend any thing that i can eat that is somewhat close to normal food?

Braces?????
oh , i just got braces today , and i can feel your pain ,

they hurt -- actually they're just very uncomfortable.

i have done a lot of research , because my pain was annoying me way too much , I found out that the pain should go away within 1-3 days.

so for now I just stick with the "soft"

foods like yogurt, applesauce, smoothies, and milkshakes.

mm, i actually had mac%26amp;cheese today so maybe you can try

to like mush them into smaller pieces and then smashing them with the roof of your mouth. make sure it's cooled down though. you can always try painkillers. ( i don't find the pain of chewing stops though)

i also heard that this happens everytime you get your braces tightened as well.

i know what you're going through.

good luck , i have 18 months to go D:
Reply:it'll get better in a week or two and then it'll just hurt for the few days after you get them tightened. I wore them for 4 years. It'll be worth it and your mouth will get used to them. I'm so glad I got braces. You will be so much more confident with a perfect smile!
Reply:Hi,

I have had my top braces on for a few months and the pain wasn't too bad when I got them on. Yesterday I got my bottom braces on and I am in excruciating pain. I really couldn't eat anything yesterday but pudding. Today at Target I found some really good Asian noodle dishes that were soft. I also ate a soft grilled cheese tonight. Soups, yogurt, apple sauce and pudding are great too. Make sure to take Tylenol to control the pain.

Good luck and it should be better in a few days.
Reply:i got brace about two months ago and yes the pain does stop, but it does take about 1 week AT THE MOST for it to stop, so just eat ice cream and soft foods (stuff like rice and really soft pasta, what i lived on for a week) and you should be good after a week
Reply:The pain does go away after about 2 weeks after you first get your braces on, then it comes back for a few days everytime you get them tightened but it's not nearly as bad. (Take a lot of tylenol!)

As for foods I found ice cream was pretty easy to eat aswell as chicken noodle soup.

I ate a lot of Ramen too. Just make sure you cut the noodles with a spoon/fork really well!

Make sure you cut up your food so you don't have to chew a lot. That goes for almost every food. Even foods you wouldn't ever, ever cut up XD.
Reply:mine stopped hurting completely on the fifth day but until thern eat really soft food
Reply:yeah it does. dont worry and use advil.it helps a lot. u can eat ramen noodles.theyre easy.
Reply:yeah i have braces...

i've had them for a about a year now.

but uhm, there not so bad.

you get used to them.

oh %26amp; yeah it will hurt when you first eat, so just eat really soft foods! like yogurt, or jello. or stuff like that.

but don't worry, it only hurts for about a day or so.

hope i helped ♥
Reply:i got braces a while ago hurt for about 3 days or so.....cottage cheese yogurt and soup manly stuff you can let slide down your throat. hope i helped.
Reply:the pain will definetly go away.

any kind of soup would be good because you arent chewing anything
Reply:mashed potatoes and soup.

wow. i had chef boy ardee once with braces

and only once.

don't eat it again.

it takes about twenty minutes to get all those little pieces of meat out of your teeth.

yeah, the pain stops. it'll come back every once in a while.

and don't try spaghetti for a few weeks. you'll choke on it.

good luck!

Braces??????!!!?

Before i get braces do i have to have lost all my baby teeth?

Braces??????!!!?
They may still put braces on, just not in the baby tooth. Once it falls out and the new one comes in they would then put a bracket on it.

Good luck

Lauren %26lt;3
Reply:yes.. otherwise they will pull them for you
Reply:think so . cuz braces makes the teeth aline into the right places to look pretty. if one of ur teeth falls out during process..kinda hard to do that don't u think?
Reply:i have braces and yes u need to lose all ur teeth but if u dont thts fine they usually take them off
Reply:yes

your adult teeth will not come in straight unless your REALLY lucky so it would be a waste of money to staighten baby teeth

get braces after all your adult teeth have come in.
Reply:yeah, but hey, it can be worse, since my teeth were too big for my jaw, they had to take out 4 permanent teeth. They have to do what they gotta do, hopefully your dentist knows what he is doing, gl and stay in there.
Reply:Yes, I had to wait till all my baby teeth were out before I could get them.
Reply:yes. most of them. sometimes they will let you slid if you have one baby tooth depending on who you go to for your braces. but once the baby teeth are gone you most likely will get the braces soon after that.
Reply:depends on your orothodontist* and if he puts them on b4 uve lost all ur baby teeth you have to get them put back on. so its best to wait.

*= is that how you spell it???
Reply:no but most people have.

Braces????????????????

how bad to braces hurt when you get them on at first, and for how long

Braces????????????????
they dont hurt being put on but after they will hurt for 2-3 days but some advil should help the pain.
Reply:http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/The...
Reply:its not pain its more like alot pressure. how long? depends on how long u'll have em. Ive had them for 5 years now.
Reply:it doesnt hurt that bad but it will give u some cuts from the metal but it wont always be like that ur mouth will get used to them
Reply:my friend has told me that they hurt pretty bad. but honestly, mine didnt hurt at all when i got them on until i ate. so normally, when you're not doing anything they probly wont hurt but when you eat they might so eat soft foods for about 3-4 days and move on to more normal foods and within a week it should be about gone.
Reply:it's a pretty annoying pain and it lasts about a week. after that, it'll only hurt if you get hit in the mouth obviously, and after each time they change stuff, and it'll last a day or 2 each time
Reply:Yes there IS a little pain associated with the application of braces---it takes maybe 3-4 days before all the pain is gone completely... like anything else that is new, they will take time to get used to....they may hurt a bit now, but once you get them off and have beautiful teeth and a beautiful smile, you will be happy you had them----I wore them for 7 YEARS, along with a monsterous thing called a head cap (metal wires attached to the braces with a velcro CAP that went over the top and around the back of the head that was worn at night to push the teeth in even futher......looked really beautiful--Not. but after the braces came off, my teeth were straight and BEAUTIFUL.
Reply:I have had braces for about 3 months now. They hurt pretty bad when you first get them on. At first you can't eat solids. Be prepared to eat smashed up food or liquids. It hurts for about a week, and every once in awhile after that. By the time you go to get the colors changed you will be back to normal. I recommend taking some pain reliever before you go to have them put on. Take it alot and be careful what you eat. Everyone makes them sound bad, but they really aren't. and the end result will be worth while. I thought you might want to experiment with the colors, go here and play around with the different colors.

http://suffolkbraces.com/choose_look.htm
Reply:I wouldn't say hurt, more like uncomfortable.
Reply:When you first get them in and they start putting the colored bands on you will feel a lot of pressure on your teeth making them extremley sore. Mine started throbbing in the evening but after I fell asleep and woke up the next morning the throbbing was gone and I didn't feel any pressure. But be aware your teeth will be extremely sensative. I couldn't even sleep on my side because of the pressure it put on my teeth. I couldn't even lick my lips without some pain. And break out your grinder so you can grind up food really fine, that way you just swallow, no chewing. I'm not trying to scare you but just be prepared for it. It may not be as bad as I say it was for me because I hate teeth pain. Taking tylenol or advil might help but it didn't do anything for me. By the end of the week you will feel much better and you will be able to eat solid foods but you may still have to break it off instead of using your teeth to bite a piece.

Also since your lips and mouth aren't used to the braces they got sore pretty quick so put wax (usually they offer it to you) and just put a whole bunch of it over all the brackets or the ones that cause problems. (it relieves the pain so much better) after a few days your mouth will get used to it and you can stop putting the wax on.

Don't worry to much just go in get them in and on your way home ask mom to stop at wendy's or mcdonalds to get your self a milkshake/mcflurry. It helps numb your teeth and it's yummy!

Good luck and look forward to a mouth with straight shiny teeth!
Reply:it takes awhile....after each tighten it hurts again.
Reply:I've never experienced any pain with my braces and I've had mine on for 3 and a half years. Most people get their braces off within 2 years but I have to have multiple surgeries to fix my teeth. When you first get them on you have a strange tightening feeling to your teeth and it may be hard to eat at first. So stock up on soup, yogurt, apple sauce, and easy-to-eat foods.
Reply:I've had braces for 3 weeks now. when i first put them on, they didn't hurt at all. It was just a little sensitivity when i brushed and threaded the floss. But I couldn't eat solids at all. All i ate was soup. I did lose like 5 pounds in 5 days, but now im so used to them. I eat things like soup and jawbreakers and everything in between. Best luck!!!
Reply:they don't hurt when they're putting htem on.

there's just some pressure.

and it's kind of uncomfortable with

the cheek retractors and cotton.

they do hurt afterwad.

but not as bad as spacers.

they hurt for about three days for me and then there

were some days where they were just an itty bit sore.
Reply:It starts to hurt like an hour later. And you will have pain for a few days.

Braces?????

i NEED BRACES!!

i hate my teeth and smile!

i want to tell my mom but she will keep sayin stuff about my dad {{my mom and dad are divorced}} she will say "Well i DONT know GO to your father let him buy them for u" but hes HARDLY around!!

i dont know what to day...i i need to have them before school starts!!

but i only have 2 more baby teeth but they are loose but i still dont know what to do!!??

Can somebody PLEASE help mee??

i need help talking her in to this but i need advice on how im goin to do this!!

AHHHH!!!

Braces?????
you should pay a contribution to them. tell your mom that you will pay 1/4 of it. only 1/4 becasue their like $2000 total. and just tell your mom that your ready, and tell her that you dad is never around. maybe she'll consider it. and you don't want braces. i have them and i hate them but, if you need them, that's a different story. hope this helps:]

Braces!?!?

I have a wire sticking out of my braces and I shoved it up my braces like i usually do to give me some peace from it for 5 minutes.

EXCEPT just now I accidentally shoved it up a bit too hard and now I think it's caught.

I'm super scared it's messing up my teeth, because I can feel the impact of it, and I'm getting my braces off around march 26th.

Help!!! Is it moving my teeth? Am I going to need like 6 more months of braces?

DDDDDDDDDDDDDD:

PLEASE HELP

Braces!?!?
you're teeth can't move very much in a little more than 1 week. you'll be fine. just work on it a little to get it back, and if it doesn't, dont worry about it
Reply:well i think u shud go to the ortho bcuz he will fix it and u can get ur braces off sooner. i broke a bracket and the doc fixed and i got them off sooner then later.
Reply:I'm sorry, but there really is nothing else to do but schedule an ortho. appt. You braces may need to be fixed and they're the only ones who can do so. My orthodontist encourages me to call or come in anytime I feel something poking or something has broken..I'm sure yours wouldn't mind. They probably get a lot of "emergency visits".
Reply:better get to doctor before it gets infected.
Reply:well, is it worth it not to go to the orthodontist? think about it, would you rather be embarrassed for 30 min or have 6 more months of braces? its really your choice.
Reply:Well i try to fix it... I've had problems myself w braces but I don't really mess w them... if u can't fix it then I'm sorry 2 say u prob. should go 2 the orthodontist
Reply:go see your orthodontist/dentist/ (tip:anytime you know or even just think somthing is wrong CONTACT YOUR DENTIST.its either that,or 'bout 2-6 months of MORE braces.

im 10 and getting mine wendsday 19,2008.
Reply:Now I know this may sound stupid. But yes go to the ortho. If you do not get this fixed your teeth will be messed up, infection in the mouth, cuts in your mouth, and you'll have to wear your braces even longer. Now if you dentist gave you some solid wax, put it over the pointy end of the wire. This will solve any discomfort but only temporarily. The replacement of the wire should only take 10 - 15 minutes.

Braces????

i have bottom braces and a top expander on now, but in less than 2 weeks im getting my top braces and i was wondering does it hurt as bad as getting the bottom braces or more? alot of people at my school say all different things. i know that it doesnt hurt right after you get them on but i know that in a few hours it does.

also: what foods would be good to have in the hours of having them on?

AND

when your in your last stage of braces and you have to wear elastics, what is it like? does it hurt, is it annoying? can you be specific please?

Braces????
i thought the bottom hurt more when i got braces

for fodds i'd eat soup,pudding,ect.

i had to wear elastics towards the end at first they hurt your jaw but then i got use to it, yeah they are annoying even after a year i still find small rubber bands around my room, and they are annoying by you have to take the rubber bands out everytime you eat and then when your done you have to put them back on
Reply:be happy that your only getting your top braces I have to get surgery on two upper teeth that are in my gums soon! and getting your top braces for me hurt less than the bottom....the only time that braces hurt...well not really the braces...i was at the orthodontist and the nurse who wasn't paying attention accidentally poked the wire through my skin instead of my braces! i was sooooooo mad! well gd luck with braces! and don't be too scared because there is nothing to be scared about! :)
Reply:lol dont stress. i got my braces put on yesterday. it feels the same way it did when u got ur bottom braces put on. ice cream, milkshakes, anything thats cold and u dont have to chew is good, they dont hurt rite away, but they will for the next couple of days!
Reply:the bottom ones actually hurt more than the top do. you should eat soft foods like soup or yogurt or mashed potatoes [if you can] during the first hours. im not in my ast stage seeing as how i juszt got them on but i heard they hurt sorry i couldnt help w/ this part. Good luck.!

Braces????

I have to get braces I was just wanted to know a few things:

-Do they let you chose the color of the braces?

-If they let you chose what colors should i have?

-Did it hurt while the dentist was applying the braces?

-What is the average time some one has there braces on for? because I know different people have them on for different times.

Braces????
on a scale of 1-10, i would says the hurt factor is 5

i think the braces on the second day hurt the most. spacers hardly hurt

***average time normally goes from 6 months to 4 years but most people have them on for about 16-18 months

***u can get as many pattern of colors u want, but dont go more than 2

***pink and light blue are cute colors

***NEVER get white or clear bands cause white looks like food is stuck in ur braces and clear like it u eat ketchup or a lollipop or somethin, they stain

***they put the bands, and then every time u go back u get to choose new colors

k

i have gotton em on over 6 times (dont ask!)

it doesnt hurt dont worry-it is just a long process and it tastes kinda bad

they give u a band on ur molars fiist, to see ur size and stuff

first theu put this positioner thing is ur mouth, it makes your mouth stretch a lkot so they can see ur teeth, it will bother u for a minute or 2 but u will get used to it, u keep that thing on the WHOLE time

then there are these things that look like shots and stuff, i got really freaked out when i first saw them but actually, they dont go in ur mouth! this is the cement that they put on ur braces then they stick the braces on ur teeth

**the cement kinda tastes bad!

they do this the first time and every time u get them tightened:

they will put the rubber bands on ur braces with things that look like sisscors (they dont hurt) after that they put the wire-this is the most anoying part cause after they slip it in ur mouth, they have to cut it to make it fit right

then that is it!Ur done

but after u do it, ask ur doctor for dental wax, dental cotton balls, and rubber cover up

***each person is different i bleed a little on the first day and i put a few cotton balls in my mouth for like 3 minutes

when u get home use ACT mouthwash and for the first hour, ur teeth may be a little numb so drink mainly fluids-clear fluids

then for the first day or 2 ur teeth may be a little sensitive so stick with eating soup, pasta, pudding, jello, beans, yogurt, custard, fries, milkshakes, ice cream, and soft foods-avoid straws

every night use Peroxyl mouthwash for like a week to keep ur gums storng from cuts and use dental wax and rubber coverups so u wont get blisters, they hurt a little but arent that bad. avoid sleeping on ur side, try to keep ur head straight up for a couple of days

every morning and every night use the Peroxyl mouthwash again for 2 weeks then after that just use ACT mouthwash to keep ur teeth and gum s healthy. get some Super floss, made for braces-i sugest elictrical toothbrushes they keep ur mouth cleaner

dont worry-trust me- i have had my braces on for almost 4 years, i just got em off about two months ago-i luv my new smile!!!
Reply:yes you get to choose your color

I use to get light pink, but i do silver now

its doesn't hurt when the orthodontist is putting the braces on,just takes time.

18-24 months
Reply:most orthadontists will let you choose a color.

i usually got green, around halloween i would get red and black. chirstmas i would get green and red. but usually i would just get a green color. Green is my fav and it matched my eyes.

getting braces put on might hurt a little bit but its really not that bad.

I had my braces for about 2 years i think. my brother had them for 3 years. it really depends on how messed up your teath are before you get the braces on. every month they tighten the braces. it doesn't hurt when that happens but later that day your mouth may be a little sore. having braces will get annoying just cuz you get tired of having metal in your mouth. but it is really worth it. when you get them off it feels so good to have straight teeth without any metal on them. lol
Reply:Yes, you can choose your braces and choose and change the colors of your bands. I had white, porcelain braces with clear bands.

Start with Christmas colors. You can change them after about 2 months.

No, it doesn't hurt when they put the braces on. It just feels different. Only when they start moving teeth or changing jaw size does it begin to hurt. It isn't that bad.

I wore mine for 3 years.
Reply:1. Yes thay let you choose

2. I prefer lime green and pink or navy and a lighter blue

3. No when you start eating then yeah

3. Yeah your right it depends on your case i have to for 20 months it's usually from about 1 1/2 to 2 years
Reply:i recommend you find an orthodontist with the newer Damon SL Brackets, they dont require color, because they dont require rubber bands, there much smaller in size, and take less treatment time, they are half stainless-steel and half resin brackets.

It does not hurt when the braces are first put on, but after a couple of hours, the pressure on your mouth builds up. and after 3 or so days, your mouth will feel comfortable again.

The time of treatment varies on how crowded your teeth may be, usually expect 1-2 and half years with the new Damon Brackets, and expect a longer time if your getting the older traditional braces with rubber bands, you may also even need to get an extraction on your 2 upper and 2 bottom premolars (thats 4 teeth taken away from your mouth) if your teeth are too overly crowded with the traditional braces. With damon brackets you wont need extractions.
Reply:Awesome! getting braces is exciting, i got my braces 5 months ago! i know quite a bit because i did my co-op at school at an orthodontist. They let you choose your colours, my favourite are turquoise and coral! colours like smoke, baby blue, white, bubble gum pink tend to fade and dye really easily. It didn't hurt that much, it's mainly disconfort from having your mouth open that long. Orthodontic treatment varys for person to person, if your case if bad or oyur young your likely tohave them on for a few years, i'm having mine on for close to a year because i'm making fast progress because my gums are very healthy. To speed up treatment keep your teeth clean clean clean and brush your gums! It hurts after you get them on so try and eat after you get them on! good luck with your braces!
Reply:Yes you choose the color

Choose any color but yellow, orange or light green (it makes you look like you have food stuck in them)

No, but It hurts the day after you get them on... and sometimes when they get tightened.

Average... i'd say 3 years a bit more depending on the state of your teeth. I hope i was helpful and don't freak out about them.
Reply:ok,

yes they have many colors...

- you can choose your band colors they range from guyish colors like dark blue, green and black... to pink and orange- even teal and lime.

- for SOME orthodontists they give you an option on the actually permanent part- they may give you the option for clear (in my opinion arent good looking), silver (classic), or gold (im not sure whether it looks good w/ colored bands but i cant imagine so- plus it makes u look like you have a gangsta grill- lol)

-i recomend- pink, teal (personal fave), purple, and gray/silver

-i DONT recomend pale colors- if u have a whitening toothpaste they fade and look greenish (NOT attractive), also yellow and green might look like food stuck or plaque, but i have dark green on right now and it looks pretty good.

-it doesnt so much hurt when they put them on but after your teeth start to move it kills and you need tylenol for like three days after getting them on... after a week or so you get used to them and the sores go away- for sores i recommend tanic (namebrand) its a small bottle of yellowish gross looking stuff and it tasted horrid but it numbs your sores- just put on wax and tanic and your good to go- tanic also helps the healing- they also have these new things for the canker sores- there like plastic discs and they stick on the sore like a bandaid.

i havent tried them yet so i dont know. A few days after every ajustment is uncomfortable but its ok after like two or three days.

-the average i believe is like two years- thats what they tell most people depending on your situation- ive had mine on for two years and im very close to getting them off- my teeth were pretty screwed up but not as bad as some ive seen.

Hope that helped and good luck with your braces!!! :)

-Did it hurt while the dentist was applying the braces?

Braces????
Cool im getting them off in a few weeks.

alright well....

first question

Do they let you chose the color. Yes they do they have many colors.

They let you have 2 colors.. yes. or you could have 1.

they kinda did but not bad. There just like glueing them onto your teeth.. But u feel like pressure.

The aberage is about 2 years.. buts always depending on your teeth...

Awwwe%26lt;3 dont worry you will be ok.. and trust me you will be sooo happy when u get them off!

GOOD LUCK%26lt;33333
Reply:The braces themselves are only one color-the metal. But they put elastics on the fronts and you can choose those colors. A lot of times if they ask you can have two different colors. I had mine on for about a 1 1/2 years. It doesn't hurt when they put them on, but you feel the tightness after.. not bad though
Reply:-Yes you get to pick the color of the bands they put on your brackets and the color of the chain. Most times you can pick 2 colors. Or one if thats what you want!

-Well it doesn't HURT while they're putting them on, but it's not comfortable because they have this this thing that holds your mouth open and it feels weird. But they really hurt afterwards for a few days. It will hurt to eat too, so it might be a good idea to get some soft foods and food that is easy to eat like soup, spaghetti Os, mashed potatoes, etc.

-How long you have them on all depends on YOU! Your teeth are unique and it depends on how crooked your teeth are. But it helps to wear your rubberbands everyday when you get them, even if they hurt your teeth the first few days.

A tip from someone with braces: those flossy pick things are great for when something gets stuck in your braces!

Good Luck and I hope this helped!
Reply:yes they let you choose the color(i have light pink!) you can have as many color as you want...you can even do a rainbow pattern but tell them exactly how you want it so they wont mess it up.it doesn't hurt at all when they put them on but you nay be sore a couple hours after. the average time for braces was is about 18 months-9 years(i have mine for 2 years and my teeth are in pretty bad shape)good luck! =)
Reply:-The orthodontist should let you chose the color of you brackets. Usually there is gold, silver, and clear to chose from.

-Deepening on your orthodontist, you can usually chose two different colored elastics

-The braces going on shouldn't hurt. The brackets just get cemented on, then the wire goes on and the elastics hold them together. You may feel some discomfort after, when your teeth start moving, but not when the braces go on.

-Mine only need to be on for a year or so, but it really depends on the case. My teeth are strait, but i have an overbite that needs to be corrected.

Good Luck,

Lauren %26lt;3

Braces....?

hey guys thnx for giving me the answers...but i dont know when i will gonna use braces.. my mom said that when they put braces it doesn't hurt but if it is done its gonna hurt.... my best friend aeya told me that before they put the braces it takes many hours to finish.. aeya has braces that have colors... it can be change every weeks she said ''its gonna be hurt when they adjust it and when they change the color'' i think its gonna be hurt... yikes!! but its for my own good.. i dont like rabbits teeth coz its not comfortable when iam eating...

Braces....?
i hate to break it to you, but braces hurt pretty bad. They only hurt for about the first week after you have them on, and when you get them adjusted (When you get them adjusted, then they only hurt for about two days.) After the first week though, they really aren't that bad. You just have to get used to eating with them. I think mine took and hour and a half to be put on, but they hurt more coming off. You will usually have them for about two years, and yes they are a pain sometimes, but they are definitely worth it!
Reply:it's not that they necessarily hurt. It's mainly sore gums, because the teeth are now being exposed to all this pressure building up from the "memory arch shaped" wire. That's why it doesnt hurt at first when you get them on. But an hour or so later, you'll definetely feel that pressure kicking in on your teeth, and they will become more fragile to movement.

I highly recommend you getting Damon Braces. Unlike Conventional Braces, these do not have colors (that's a good thing). Simply because the brackets do not have little elastic rubber bands around them to hold the wire in. You also will not have to worry about it hurting everytime there's an adjustment. Because you will be getting a new thicker wire instead of getting your braces tightened. It may feel sore if you were to get adjustments such as power chains, but other than that, you wont expect it. These are better, more effective braces, right next to invisalign.

Braces?!?!?

I am going to get braces so if you got braces please help me!!!

First, Is it harmful if you swallow the wax you put on your braces????

Sencondly, Is there anything out there that you could use to make your mouth numb so the braces wouldn't hurt you, like something the you could like swish through your mouth or something.

Please help!!!!!

Braces?!?!?
Swallowing the wax is harmless because the wax is harmless becasue the wax is easily digestive. All about braces:

When you get them put on, do NOT make the same mistake i made, wear chapstick, you will have your lips be separated and if you don't wear chapstick it will feel as if the dentist is slowly ripping your lips apart. This is how they get put on:

*1. Your teeth are cleaned and dried.

*2. A special "glue" is put on yor teeth.

*3. Each bracket is put on each tooth one by one.

*4.The glue is dried with this special UV light.

*5. The wire is then put on, help by the ligatures, or, if you are getting speed or damon braces, connected through the little hole.

And now, here's your list of do's and don'ts with your braces:

Do's:

*Brush your teeth every day

*For the first days, eat soft foods.

*If at school, use mouthwash at least.

*Floss at least once daily.

*Take Tylenol 1 hour before they get put or immediately after they get put.

*Wear chapstick

Don'ts:

*Don't eat hard, sticky or gooey foods.(for the first days, the ortho tells you not do it but as long as you brush after, its all good)

*Don't chew gum with sugar. (Try trident sugarless gum,it's good for your teeth and it tastes good.)

*Don't touch your braces too much or you might break them.

*Don't rub your tongue against your braces, you might cut your self.

*Don't chew on pencils or erasers.

*Don't bite your nails.

Remember: Braces work by applying pressure to your teeth. If your teeth are uncomfortable and feel like their being pressured, that's a GOOD thing.

Colors:

Try getting colors to match upcoming holidays such as green and red for Christmas. Don't be afraid to mix it up and express your self! Also, theres something new called braces jacketz and it's these clip-on things that have letters and sings, heres the link: http://www.bracketjacketz.com/home.html!...

Good luck and remember,it's worth it in the end!

Pain:

Pain and discomfort is common for the first five days.(or around that time.) Since your gums are still soft, the brackets will slightly cut your mouth. If that happens, go to your local drugstore and buy a canker medicine and put it around your gums. For the pressure, drink lots of ice cold water because the cold loosens the wires.

So yeah that's all I could think of now if there's more I'll add it.

I almost forgot, if your braces start cutting you then go to:http://www.dentakit.com/cocoforbr.html..... to buy a comfort cover, they really work!

All in all,

Don't worry hun, you'll be OK!!
Reply:i've never swallowed the wax, but i'm pretty sure it isn't harmful. It's pretty hard to swallow it. Take advil before you go in. It doesn't hurt to get them on, at all, but afterwords you may be in a little pain. It didn't hurt me at all, and i'm a cry baby.

good luck!
Reply:it will hurt. it will be hard to eat. no its not harmful to swallow the wax i did all the time. try orajel its not a mouth wash but its like a paste stuff good luck enjoy ur new straight teeth when u get them off
Reply:it is not harmful to swallow the was, just dont swallow too much. they usually give you stuff to numb some spots of your mouth. they only hurt the first 2 days to make them straight. and you can talik.
Reply:I found the wax not very helpful. I would put it on and after being in my mouth for like 5 min. it would fall off. I never used it, and I was fine. I did swallow it once, but it's not that bad. Hm..for making your mouth numb, I guess you could use the stuff that's for kancer sores. It numbs the sore, so I guess it could work on your gums or w/e. They're not that bad. After a while you get used to the pain of getting them tightened and you find them hurting for shorter amounts of time.
Reply:the wax is not harmful, but as for the numbing, i would eat like 3 popsicles in a row so its cold numb, and then it wouldnt hurt for like 30 minutes. But remember eat mainly liquids, and things you can suck on. and as a little tip, dont get clear or white bands, they stain and look nasty!
Reply:1) Swallowing the wax is no biggie.

2) The braces hurt because your teeth are being shifted. It doesn't hurt the same way as a cavity, for example. So I don't think any kind of numbing rise or orajel would do much. Take something like Tylenol or Advil for the pain. It'll last longer and work better.

3) I won't lie...they hurt for a little while after you get them on and after each time you get them tightened. But it's more of a discomfort than pain. If you had spacers like I did, I can tell you the pain is NOT as bad as them. For me, spacers hurt more than most kinds of pain I've ever experienced!

4) It'll only be awkward to talk and eat for the first week or two while you're getting used to having them. You'll probably want to eat softer foods for a couple days until the discomfort and tightness goes away. But soon, they'll just get to be a part of you. The inside of your lips toughen up a bit and you won't even notice them. Then, once they come off, it almost feels like your teeth are gone! Everything's so smooth and gorgeous.

Hope that was helpful. Don't worry about any pain, it's no big deal. Definitely all worth it once they come off and you have a great smile! :)
Reply:Welll when you first get them eat ice cream and relax!:)

second use swish mouthwash
Reply:I don't think it's harmful to swallow the wax. I haven't swallowed it yet, that I know of.

and Listerine could help numb your mouth from some pain.

It isn't hard to talk, and it's not hard for me to talk.
Reply:First of all, calm down. It's not harmful if you swallow the wax, I've done it and nothing happened... if the wax was harmful to you, then it wouldn't go in your mouth, right?

For pain relief, you could try GUM brand Rincinol, it works pretty good on me. It helps soothe canker sores, and many other pain problems associated with orthodontic appliances. Or you could try orajel, it's this gel that comes in a small tube, and you apply small amounts to the painful areas so that it numbs the area. You could also try aspirin... but it doesn't work as well as orajel or rincinol. And last but not least, you can try the old fashioned way: combine some salt with warm water and rinse with that.

Goodluck!

Braces??????

I may be getting braces soon. I am 24 years old. I have developed an underbite and my dentist feels that I need braces. I have a consulation with the Orthodontist.

My question is how much are braces? Do all Ortho's have payment plans.

I live on my own and have insurance but they do not cover Braces. SO I am stuck paying for it myself.

Any advice would be greatful.

Braces??????
yes they have payment plans, but i cnt tell you price b/c it varies person to person %26amp; orthodontist to orthodontist. Mine cost $6,000.
Reply:you'll have a monthly payment, and depending on how bad your teeth are will depend on the cost. Mine cost bout 2,000, it costs bout 125 a month.

ask for clear braces of something, you hardly know they are on!

ps. I dont think its really necessary to have braces with only an underbite, thats just a dentist talkin b/c they want your money.
Reply:The cost A pretty good lot... I haven't had any so I dont know the price but try google..
Reply:mine cost $5,000 but i paid in instalments- had appointments every 6 weeks and paid $200 each time.

most ortho's should have payment plans, i dont know anyone who's had to pay up front.

stick to the metal braces, not clear- they are effective and cheaper, and its not like you can't see the clear ones anyway.

good luck!
Reply:I didn't deal with the money when I first got my braces on (my parents did)...but you'll find a way to pay. Just talk to your ortho!

Reply:Don't be pressured into something you don't want to do. If you're 24, you're correcting the looks of your teeth. It's not like you're 13 and your teeth and jaw are still growing.

If you do it, see if he offers Invisalign. You're older and they give that to older patients because it's up to the patient for it to work well. It's the same idea as braces, just less noticeable and it's seems to be quicker. You can take out the aligners to eat and brush. I'm doing it now for top and bottom teeth. Cost me about $3000 which is a pretty good price. And I need them for 6 months. I think braces would take longer. It takes a little getting used to but once you've had them, you forget they're in there. And bonus, if you're a person who snacks a lot, it'll stop you from doing that because you need to take out the aligners to eat. So, you may lose weight too.

And yes, they offer payment plans. Or, you can pay it all up front and get a little discount.

Braces?!!?!?!?!?!?

So I'm getting braces pretty soon. I wanna know how they put it in and will it hurt? I heard it hurts alot when they tighten your braces and you will feel pressure? I also have no idea what I can eat and what I can't eat. I'm kind of worried of swallowing the pieces of my braces. My friend also had braces,he said it hurt and he ended up with a gap between his front teeth.

Braces?!!?!?!?!?!?
Well first they start by placing smoothing off your teeth with some kind of tool, and then they take these square metal brackets and glue them on and use a light gun to speed the drying process. Most of that part dose not hurt. When they place the bands on your back larger teeth they have you bite down on a plastic and metal tool so that it sets, they will also use glue on this. For the first week or two they probably wont use a wire or at least they didn't use it first on me.

As to when they tighten them once a month or so, depends of what they are trying to do. The pain lasts for a day or two three at most. I used pain killers any kind at the store will do. And try not to chew hard foods that will help a large amount.

Foods that you can eat are most everything that you can eat right now. But your Doctor should have a list of what they dint want you to eat. Gum, pop corn, taffy, and some other get stuck real easy. But I ate just about all my favorite foods. Some times tooth picks can help. But when they tighten the braces eat yogurts. Once they have your braces fully intact its kinda hard to swallow parts, and when they have the wire on its just really really hard for that to happen.

As long as you have a good doctor their shouldn't be a gap. Just stress that part to your doctor and he will try to pay attention to that request. But making sure that you and your teeth are happy should be their most important job.

Well I hope I answered some of your questions and braces are not all that bad just follow their directions and it will be shorter than usual.
Reply:they cement them on. that is painless. take lots of ibuprofen and you'll be fine.

I mean, your teeth are gonna be really sore and it will hurt but it doesn't last too long and it's not some kind of overwhelming pain or anything.

you'll be fine.

edit: they put a gap in my teeth too, but they closed it later. they just needed it to make certain everything was spaced and aligned and all and the two front teeth were centered.
Reply:Hahahah oh man I had braces SOOO long ago. But I will never forget the first day I got them. They hurt sooo bad, I couldn't even eat a french frie. The gap between the front teeth arent from the braces they are from a spacer.. if you get one. When they tighten them.. it hurts but not nearly as bad as the first day you get them.
Reply:The end result is PHENOMENAL so don't worry about pain the first few days you might find your self eating soup but that is not a good enough reason not to get them. The pain is bearable to some extent.
Reply:it hurts the day after...stock up on yogurt and advil!

ya it's gonna hurt a little each time and for ur friend...probably didn't wear his retainers...shame shame shame they'll tell u what u can and can't eat.

w.e tho i ate everything when they told me not 2 then again mayb that's why i had them on 4 4 and a half years

not fun
Reply:Okay. what they will do is clean off the teeth a little. then they will put the cement on and the bracket and dry it into place. after they do all the brackets they will slide the wire in. When you first get them it is uncomfortable because you are not use to the tension. But after a while its fine. Also when tightening it is a little pressure but not much and after a while it won't even bother you. At first i reccomend eating softer foods such as mashed potatoes; soup.. you know

Hope I Helpedd
Reply:ok first of all it does not hurt when they put them on but when you do start eating something for the few first weeks it'll hurt a bit because your teeth are moving and you only get a gap if you have two crooked teeth next to each other :] hope this helps
Reply:don't worry about them :) You might feel a slight discomfort for the first 2 or so weeks, but it'll soon go away.

It didn't really hurt when they put it on, but it was a bit awkward though. You'll get used to it after like 2 weeks.
Reply:When you get them put on it hurts for a week or so. and when you get them tightened they feel tight and hurt a bit. But you'll get used to it. You wont swallow your braces pieces unless you do something stupid.
Reply:They won't hurt too much going in, but you may be sore for a few days. There's no need to worry about swallowing pieces, since the brackets are not only attatched to the wire, but also "glued" to your teeth.

You should probably not eat a lot of sticky foods, as the braces become quite difficult to clean.
Reply:Don't worry so much! Yes it will hurt a bit for a day or two when they put them in and when they tighten them. That's your teeth moving around but Tylenol should help a bit. You do feel some pressure when they tighten it but nothing too intense. When they put the braces on they glue boxes on your teeth and add the wire and the elastics to hold it in place. As for what you can eat anything super hard is out of the question (almonds, raw carrots). GUm and super chewy stuff (like Starbursts) are also not wise to eat. And if your braces do break you probably will notice way before you swallow anything. And the results will be great! My teeth look way better now than they did when I started braces.
Reply:They just glue things to your teeth and connect them with a wire. For some people they hurt, i guess. For me, it bothered me sometimes, but for the most part, i got used to it. When they tightened them the first couple of times.. it bothered me when i was about to sleep and just lying down. I took Advil so i could stop feeling the pressure.

Braces shouldn't leave you a gap between your teeth. Your friend probably didn't wear his retainers when he got them off. My teeth looks great now! i'm glad i got braces.
Reply:ok well they dont hurt the first day once you get them on but eat alot before 2nd day is death so smothieesapsihfef== my best friend haha cant spell today ahh! you dontt really feel pressure untill you get a chaaiin they hurts like hell you wont! swallow a piece of your braces trust me i though i would also in the beginning you should eat anything hard or sticky because your mouth it will hurt but once you get use to it you can eat everything you normally eat and i know the dentist is like noooo! dont eat anything sticky or chewy or sour or good of popcorn crap dont believe them im getting my braces off in a week ( YEAH ) and ive only lost a bracket once and they was when i was in the waiting room being stupid with a jawbreaker ahhh! so anyways good luck trust me it wont hurt they are actually pretty sweet. %26lt;3 best of luck !!! =] - charlette%26lt;3
Reply:relaaaaaaax! I had braces for....well for ever! since 8th grade (im now in college and i STILL have them! ha-ha) Well seriously relaxx! haha it doesnt hurt when they put it the first time, and when they tighten it, it doesn't hurt when they do it (well that is if your orthodentist is not a violent torturing maniac), but for a few days after, you will feel a strong pressure and speccially the first times, well it "hurt" me but be strong! ha! And for the swallowing bit, i never did! i don't think it's possible! and if you swallow a piece, it's not dangerous anyways!!
Reply:id like to tell u it will b okay but i cant... i have a serious tolerance for pain and i think braces hurt! u will be sore and u cant chew solid food for a few days, your mouth will get cut by the brackets which will cauz weird cuts bumps and holes in your mouth, but other than that ull be totalyy fine. they put them on by stick some gluelike stuff on your teeth and then sticking a bracket onto it, then they put a funny light on the tooth to make the glue dry (they do this with each tooth), then they put in a wire, then they close the doors of the braces (hurts when you feel the wire tighten) for the first like week they will feel huge but dont worry soon u get used to them... im sure other answerers will sugar coat things but im telling it like it is! good luck and dont worry they stop hurting soon enough (or not jkjk) best of wishes!
Reply:I've had braces for like a half of a year now, and it doesn't really hurt when you first get them on, but the days after are like hell. You don't have to worry about swallowing anything that comes off of your braces. Everything is secured tightly... unless you bite something really hard or eat something that's really frozen. (I ate a frozen magic bar, and I broke off one of my brackets :P) If you get rubber bands... oh the fisrt like four days you wear them, it feels worse than when you first got your braces on. When they tighten the braces, it's like getting them over again. It's not that it hurts when you're not doing anything with your mouth, but only when you bite down or eat.

Hope this helps and best of luck. :)
Reply:they basically glue them on. it doesn't hurt during THAT procedure.

when they tighten it, it may or may not hurt much, it depends on how [bad] you're teeth are. but it doesn't hurt right away, and you don't really feel that it hurts, unless you bite down on something, or press your teeth.

i suggest eating soft foods, for the first week you get them, and whenever they tighten. stock up on things like soup, oatmeal, yogurt, pudding.. etc. do NOT eat hard things, especially the first week.

but you notice as time goes on, that the days of pain lessen. for me, pain lasts about 4 days, before, it was about a week.

dont worry about swallowing a bracket or something. as long as you don't munch on hard candy, or hard stuff in general, you should be fine. just watch what you eat. easy on the gum, limit hard stuff (im a jolly rancher fan, so i let it melt x]), and most importantly, listen to what your orthodontist advises.

then again, my ortho says DON'T EAT GUM AND POPCORN AND DON'T DRINK SODA.. but i do anyway. (;

but in moderation.

good luck! i hope i helped. (:

and don't worry, going through this is all worth it in the end, you get a killer smile! (:
Reply:The orthodontist will have to put a thing in your mouth so he's able to reach your molars. Then he'll have a type of clear glue on the brackets and place them on your teeth. Then he'll insert the wire which is what hurts because it's so tight. You can't drink soda or it'll make your brackets rust. No gum either- it might get stuck.(I still chew gum anyways though.) The orthodontist will probably give you an instructive packet or something for the do's and don'ts.
Reply:dont worry i dont think its possible to swallow the pieces of your braces; you'll notice after you've had them for like a week i think. heres some advice though: when you first get them on it wont hurt, and you'll want to bite down and feel them and stuff but DONT BITE ON THEM ON THE FIRST FEW DAYS!!! on the first few days of having them i only ate things you can drink like yogurt and pudding and stuff...and i mean drink! i tried to used a spoon but if it even hits your tooth a little by accident its like a huge surge of pain. unless after a few hours have gone by and you've realized that your one of the lucky people to have really good pain resistance dont bother trying to eat the harder foods which you normally eat- it will just cause you more pain!!! sorry if this is like freaking you out, i think how much pain you feel is different from person to person...but yeah...for me, i was like a rabid animal after getting them on they literally hurt like hell for me but good luck im really not trying to scare you hope everything goes well :]
Reply:Well they usually aren't very tight when you first get them on. When they put them on there is brackets on all teeth that are required but it is different for every individual. Then in the back two teeth there usually isnt a bracket but a thingamajig(idk what the actual name is lol!) that holds the main wire in. Then they wrap wire on each individual bracket to tightem them and to keep the main wire more secure. Then they put on the rubberbands of whichever color you choose. I'd suggest a darker color, because lighter colors stain and make your teeth look yellow. Then your done! They usually give you wax or something of the sort to put on to keep them from giving you sores in your mouth. I rarely used it except for the first few days.

The things they say you shouldn't eat are hard pretzels, although ive found that the pretzel sticks are ok. Gum, they say that suger free sticks less but ive found that sugar gum sticks less. You aren't supposed to eat popcorn cernels. I wouldn'nt reccomend breaking this rule. Laffy Taffy is very sticky and you should never eat that. Then there is caramel but if you are careful nothing happens. And then anything else hard or sticky like jawbreakers. I've found that the ones ive mentioned that i didnt follow are ok to do because nothing happens.

Don't worry about peices falling off and getting swallowed because its just not possible. If they are which rarely happens(its never happened to me and ive had mine for over a year.) and you happen to swallow it they are made to disolve in extreme ammounts of stomach acid. So if you happen to get the stomach flu they wont dissolve.

i hope i helped and i hope you dont have too much pain. i never did only on my bottom braces once. Good luck and dont worry! It's not that bad. Good luck again. Best of wishes!
Reply:ok i may not remember all of it (i got my braces in the 3rd grade and im now in 9th) so they might have started to use new tools or something but this is generally what happens:

when i got mine done, they used a special type of dental glue that would keep the braces on..but my orthodontist used this other thing where they would kinda bang at it so it would stay (probably one of the painful parts for me, dont worry it's not too bad and they probably wont use it on you but if you do you will feel a little pressure) then they will let the glue sit and dry so you will have to keep your mouth open for a little bit of time but dont worry, they use a special thing (i have NO clue what it's called, im not the best at dental terms) to keep your mouth wide open. when the wiring is on, you will feel a little pressure but you should be fine....just make sure you dont eat or drink for an hour after you get them on so you can be sure that the glue is completely dry

now this is the part that i can really remember.....the first night i had braces, my mouth hurt like a beast! i couldnt even chew a soft cookie. i would definately recommend something easy to eat (soup possibly)

make sure before you get your braces, you can eat whatever you want to...you're gonna miss it. most of the things you can't eat are candies....there are a lot of them you can still eat, but there are many that you can't eat. try to avoid foods with a lot of caramel inside, but a little won't hurt you. a few other things you shouldnt eat are gum and popcorn. temptations to eat it all will kick in when all of your friends are enjoying some popcorn and you arent. but trust me, it doesnt bring the best results. many times i had seen kids in the dentists office getting a ton of work done because they gave in. if you are going to eat gum, make sure it is sugarless...there is a type of gum called freedent (you can buy it anywhere) that is made for people with dental work. it wont stick to your braces and youll still get to enjoy gum!

about the gaps stuff, i never had a gap, and i dont have any friends who had braces and used to have a gap...so im unsure if i can help you on that part....sorry =(

Braces??!!!!?

I'm gonna get braces but before I do I have to get 4 of my teeth taken out to make room for when the braces straighten it etc. Does anyone here have braces? And will it hurt at all? How did you feel after you got it put in? And do you need retainers after you take out the braces? Soz, I'm just v. nervous lol x

Braces??!!!!?
I am in the SAME situation, i currently have braces and have had them for a year and a half.

Before i got them i was worried they would hurt too, i also got 4 teeth removed to make room.

The actually proccess of getting the braces on doesnt hurt. AT ALL. some people told me it did, some people told me it didnt.

After you go home, they may ache and hurt for a couple of days for when you try and eat. Soup and Ice Cream!!!

Same with when you go back regularily to get them tightened, it hurts a little bit when you try and eat for a couple days.

You will be fine though, dont worry.
Reply:Braces are so sexy you are going to knock em dead
Reply:haha dont be, i have braces :( they get annoying at times, and yeah they hurt...but so far ive seen a great improvement!! and it only hurts for like 2 days, then u adjust and feel normal! :D
Reply:i had the exact same thing..... dw the teeth gettin taken out isnt so bad just close ur eyes wen he gets the needle out nd the braces u wont be able 2 get properly solid food on ur teeth 4 a few days and they will ache 4 about a week but after tht its all gd
Reply:i just got my braces like 2 months ago. you will have some pain for about a week after wards, and whenever they change your wires. at first it feels wierd, but youll get used to it. dont be nervous!
Reply:i've had braces before. and lemme tell you..eat all you can eat before u get them cuhz later u wont be able to eat stuff u normally do i think. at first it will hurt and you will have problems eating and stuff. i had to put something in my mouth when i go to sleep. it sucks
Reply:Braces dont hurt like people think. It isnt until after the process that your mouth aches a bit. The brace itself my irrate your gums but they will give you wax to put on and it will feel better. Take a pain reliever before you go in and that way it will kick in by the time the dentist is done. When you first get them, your mouth will taste like metal, but dont worry that will go away after a few days . They will give you a list of food you cant eat.. Dont go over board. I could pretty much eat anything as long as I was careful not to break a brace. But it is important to brush really good and when they come off WEAR your RETAINER!! or else it would have all been for nothing!! everyones experience is different. Ive had them twice and each time it was the same. Didnt hurt and a bit achy afterward. Once you get used to them you, you`ll forget they are even there.
Reply:It's really not that bad to get braces. They just glue the bracets on your teeth run the wire throught it and then put the bands around it. All in all it's nothing to worry about. But just so you know I had braces and was freaking out over them before I got them too. They' ll be just a little tight at first but you can take something for that. Yes you'll have to wear a retainer but it's not bad ether. Don't worry you'll Probably hate them but that normal.
Reply:sorry to tell u but tes i have braces when u first get braces there not that bad but for like 2 days or so your teeth will start to ache and u will have to take advil and all that good stuff but anyways when you get them your mouth will feel very weird and just to let ya know every time you go and get them tightened they will hurt for about a week thast the only thing i hate about them but its worth it so just dont be nervous it will be fine you will get used to it!
Reply:The braces won't hurt when you put them on, they hurt afterwards.

Your braces will be annoying for a while. It will feel like someone is hugging your teeth and won't let go. The trick is to try not to let your teeth touch together, then it hurts!

How can I eat then?

You want to eat foods that require little to no chewing.(examples mashed potatoes, eggs, icecream, or maderian oranges) Just make sure that you get enough food through you. Don't starve yourself.

About the retainers..... most dentists recommend that you wear your retatiners for the rest of your life, but in reality, just wear them for a year or so.

Braces????

I am going to get braces soon, probably with in the next two months. I got some questions. What do dentists do to put on the braces? How long does the procedure take? Does it hurt? What are good colors for the braces? Once, the braces are on, what kinds of food should i stay away from? I have also heard about the rubber bands, what is that for? thanks for your help in advance and you can also give me more info if you like.

Braces????
Well we glue the brackets on your teeth and attach the wires to the brackets. About 45 minutes. Well you will be a little sore. I would say blue is a very popular color. Gummy and hard food. Bands are just for us to move the teeth the way we need it to go.
Reply:I just got braces, too. It's so much easier than it used to be they make advances all the time. All they do now to put them on is apply some glue with flouride in it on each tooth where the brackets are going to be stuck on (takes about 2 sec.) then they position each little bracket on the teeth and when they're exactly where they want them, they hold a special light near your teeth to activate the glue (takes about 2 or 3min.) The brackets have a space in them for a wire to snap into, and that's what they do with the archwire (another sec.) To keep the archwire in place, they use a special tool to somehow wrap each bracket with special little wirey bands, it doesn't hurt, it just holds the wire onto the bracket extra (maybe 1min.) After that you're done, they're on. Don't worry about what kinds of food not to eat believe me, they will explain all of that and more. They won't let you leave without making sure all of that is covered, they'll show you how to brush, what not to eat, how to floss, etc. You'll basically be able to eat whatever you're comfortable eating at the time. Your teeth will be sore at first because they're starting to move, but they won't be all the time it does wear off. Your mouth gets used to the wires and toughens up so it doesn't hurt your cheeks and stuff. You really don't need rubber bands, those are optional if you're like 12 and want funky colors or something. If you want braces that aren't too obvious you could get ceramic braces but you won't be done as soon because they're more delicate than the metal ones. Clear braces always end up looking like you have some gunk on your teeth. I chose metal ones, because they're actually really small and you can get them off quicker. They just work better all around, they're not big like they used to be they look fine lol. Congratulations on your braces, you'll love it when they come off, it's totally worth it.
Reply:don't stress about getting braces on - you get used to them fairly quickly! I have had mine on for about 4 weeks now and they don't bother me anymore. When you get them on they don't hurt until about 3 - 4 hours after having them on. The actual procedure of getting the braces on doesn't hurt - you can just feel a little pressure. I can't tell you exactly what they do to put them on but it is something like :

They put a sort of glue on each tooth and then put the square brackets on. They then measure the wire to fit your mouth and then use the colours to help put the wire in place. you can decide on the colours you want then you don't need to worry about it now. It does take some time to get used to the feeling of them in your mouth but like i said before you do get used to them in a few days. I don't really know what rubber bands are because I don't have them. I think they hook from your top braces to your bottom braces and you have one on both sides and I think they help to reline your bite - not sure though.

The dentist will tell you everything when you get there. They will definitely answer all of your questions much much better than what I have! Don't worry about them - Good luck! :)

Braces?????

I'm sixteen and I have to get braces soon but I'm really self conscious since I will have them on my whole junior year and maybe even part of my senior year. I'm a sophomore now. I was told I have 2 wear them for 1 1/2 to 2 years but thats just a guestimate. I wanted to get clear ceramic braces however my orthodontist said they just break and aren;t good. But I'm pretty self conscious about getting regular braces....

I've also been told that ceramic braces take longer then metal and I definately don't want that because then I probably will have them my entire senior year. So should I get ceramic??

Braces?????
no, the ceramics cost more and you can still tell theyre on. also, they get stained really easier when you eat and drink different foods. just go with the normal ones
Reply:whatever will look better in the yearbook
Reply:Don't be self conscious, I'm a junior now and i have braces. I would go with the regular metal. Just get them and when they come off you'll have a beautiful smile if all goes well.

Good luck : )
Reply:In my experience people who have not had braces and are afraid they will be self conscious are worried about the appearance of braces, but almost all the people I have seen who have worn them for any amount of time lose the self consciousness.

A reason for this is that many of their friends are also wearing braces at the same time. And any more it is much more normal to wear braces, almost a status symbol.

I've seen many people making a fashion statement with multi colored elastics on their braces. Much more showing them off than ashamed of them.

Metal brackets are more accurate and work better than ceramic, they are also less expensive to place.
Reply:Your ortho's right. Ceramics DO take longer, they are more expensive, and they stain very very easily. You are getting braces to improve your smile, and that is NOTHING to be self-concious about. Instead, you shoud be thrilled!! The metallic ones are what I would reccomend since SOOO any high-schoolers have them, its waaay faster an easier to maintain. Yea, it WILL be visible, but SO WHAT?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??

You shoul be PROUD to show off your braces...show to those classmates of yours that your gonna have a better smile than THEM!!!!! =D

That was my mentality when I first got my metalic braces..and guess what? I do NOT wanna take them off now!!! I love them.
Reply:I just got braces yesterday, and i was really nervous that i was going to be a "metal mouth". When I saw my braces on for the first time, I thought they kinda looked bad. But, I asked practically everyone that i knew if they were really noticeable, and if it lookded like all i had in my mouth was braces, and they said that I actually looked good, and that i chose a really good color for my ligaments (elastics). I woke up this morning, and I actually really liked how my braces look. And look on the bright side, EVERYONE HAS THEM!
Reply:I just got braces on tuesday.

Believe me, they look more natural than you think. What you should be worried about is PAIN.

You're in for a hell of a ride if you're concerned about how they look. XD

Good luck!

Braces????

i need an idea of what your teeth look like before you get braces. like my teeth have a bit of an over bite but i don't know if it is enough to get braces. also i have a little space in my two front teeth and i was wondering if i would get anything for that... please i need answers quick. thank you people so much you have helped me alot and i listen to all of your ideas.

Braces????
I'm 13 years old and i had a space between my 2 front teeth and a overbite and i had to have them. and its your choice and if you don't like the way your tooth looked and want them two things fixed go to a orthodontist.
Reply:if your teeth is slanting have spaces then you need it
Reply:if you feel uncomfortable with the way your teeth look then you should get them fixed. I wouldn't go with braces though. I would go with Invisalign. It works faster, no pain, and you can straighten and fix problems without people noticing. It is a little more costly but in the long run it is so much better than braces. You can remove them and eat, and brush and then put it back in. And the plus. No Body will even notice that you are fixing the problem.
Reply:Your problems seem mild enough that you wouldn't *need* to have them, but they could be useful for cosmetic functions. Personally, I had to have them because my teeth were so overcrowded they were pushing into my gums and making them inflamed. :)
